    Question Washing Baby Clothes/Items

I did a search but didn't find anything...

Am going to start washing bubs clothes, sheets, towels etc and wondering what is best to wash them in?

I know that you shouldn't use the normal powder, at least with a newborn, as it can cause irritation (thats right isn't it?). So what do you use?

Mum said she used to use Lux flakes, but it was annoying to have to dissolve it? (Don't really know what she means... do you have to dissolve it before using it?) And she also said it can really stuff up your washing machine...?

Someone else said just wash with nappysan... Is that ok for bubs stuff? I know mum used to soak the terry flats in nappysan and since thats a fairly sensitive area I guess it would be ok? But she never washed clothes in nappysan, she used Lux.

    Anyway, what do you use?

    i just use sensitive powder
    surf sensitive
    amolin
whatever says sensitive and fragrance free.
remember if you are going to wash in sensitive powder for bub you will have to wash EVERYTHING not jsut her clothes and sheets as she will be against your clothes and in your bed etc

I used Amolin for the first 6-8 months and then once he was on solids found that it wasn't getting the clothes clean anymore so I tried our laundry detergent and it was fine. DS had exczema as a baby and amolin was the only thing I could trust. I've heard the flakes can clog machines and sometimes don't get stains out

there was a thread on this i saw not so long ago.. i cant find it now tho.. (obviously in a preggy thread somewhere)
anyways from memory of the thread some people said they just continued using the normal washing powder/liquid. some suggested biozet? was a good one. It really depends on the bub whether they do break out.. some babies dont and some babies do have sensitive skin.
i have heard that lux soap flakes need to be dissolved in hot water, i have a sample packet of lux soap flakes from the coles baby club sample bag (which also came with a 'normal' fabric softner cuddly) ok just came back with my lux sample. (ive also heard that using lux soap flakes with cloth nappies didnt help with the absorbancy) it says its suitable for top loader washing machines only. im guessing it would stuff up your washing machine if you used to much or didnt dissolve it, afterall the ingrediants list 1) soap 2) fragrance. lol!
i imagine anything thats fully biodegradable would be fine to use on the bub, so possibly that earth choice? could be used, i know its cheap... and amolin seems never to be on special these days..
ive heard that fabric softner is bad for bub clothes that have fire resistance/retardent.. and that some people use white vinegar instead.

for DD i used amolin and normal stuff for our clothes.. no problems (i mean think about, people who will visit and want to hold your bub arent going to wash their clothes in sensitive washing stuff).
I did soak some of her leaky nappy stained suits in nappysand (but not for long, something about nappysand and metal buttons from memory) and then would put them in the wash and use amolin... at the very least it made her clothes smell nicer than the nappysand.

I've always just used our normal powder just a bit less. I always put some napisan in the wash too. I've also always added some fabric softener.

    I still wash Oskar's clothes separately...lol.

I used Earth Laundry liquid... It smells gorgeous and kept her clothes all soft and new looking I loved it. And the great thing is its all natural ( so it says on the bottle )

When I first washed baby clothes it was just in hot water. I didn't think to wash it all in anything else. I washed second hand clothes in amolin or lux etc... but I moved the whole family to a greener product that doesn't have the nasties in it.

I use omo sensitive, our DS has eczema and we have found that it is fine on his skin, so all our clothes etc get washed in it. I have washed all bubs clothes with this as well.

I have bought Amolin to wash bub's things in this time. I used to use Lux Flakes, but made sure I disolved them in a cup of hot water first.
I am too scared to take the tags off things and wash them yet PML...

I have used our normal detergent since before she was born.... She had eczema when she was little and even changing over detergents didn't make a difference for her ( not sever eczema though). When washing her littlie stuff before she was born I used hardly any detergent really, and as she got older all her stuff now gets thrown in with ours.
Good luck with it hun! OMG just looked at your ticker - whoa baby!! That has gone SOOOO fast, how exciting! Can't wait!

Thanks everyone, will look out for that tonight when we do groceries.

PMSL Sue, I know! Except Shel got all excited and took off all the tags so I guess if this little one is a boy he'll be wearing pink!
