We put ds in a bed when he was 17 months, and we lay with him til he falls asleep. But we were sitting with him next to his cot before that anyway.
Maybe you could give it a try and then slowly withdraw yourself from his room until he gets used to it?
I did this too - different ages for my two (one older one younger) but same approach.
