I've just paid a teenager (college age) about $60 for looking after DS from after school (3pm) until just after 9.30 (so just under $10 an hour). She picked him up from school, made him dinner and put him to bed. She thought that was generous - but it really did save my skin tonight.
She also did the washing up from dinner AND from the breakfast pots DH left this morning.
We paid a friend $50 to watch DS for about 4 1/2 hours, give him dinner and put him to bed. We thought that was fair and reasonable (but couldn't afford to do it all the time!).
Wow, it seems $$$ when you consider we pay my qualified FDC provider $6.85/hr! I know she has four children to look after (who each pay the same), but she's following a programme, providing art/craft materials, documenting everything and actively playing with them the whole day! Or, is it that child care workers are paid a pittance!
our nanny is through a reputable nanny agency, on top of the $22 per hour, each time she comes to us we pay an agency fee $18 and $4 travel fee. Yes it is expensive, but she is fantastic.
We pay $15 per hour if DD is asleep (no work required) and $20 per hour if she is awake. All the girls who work in my shop do babysitting part-time, they are either university graduates or still going to uni and have been babysitting for 5-8 years. The high school girls also babysit and they charge $10-$15 however I wouldn't get them to look after her whilst she was awake and I wouldn't go far.
