Question Did/does your newborn wake your toddler?

My DS will be 18mths old when our new baby is due. I am starting to get worried about how the night times will be as their rooms will be right next to each other. I can see myself never wanting to let the new baby even grizzle for a second as I will worry that he/she will disturb DS's sleep (he sleeps fairly well overnight but it has taken A LOT of work to get there). What has been your experience with bringing a new baby home who will be waking frequently at night? Does the toddler just get used to it or do they need to be resettled all the time? Just wanting to prepare myself for what is to come!

Hi Jac, I find the it's the opposite problem! My DS#1 can sleep through it all unless it is close to getting up time anyway. But if he makes a noise in bed he wakes our bub up .

I think toddlers are a lot like Dads, they can sleep through the baby crying LOL!

Try not to stress out about it, you will find a way to make it work, you'll be amazed! Good luck

It must depend on the child. My DD was 4 1/2 when we brought the new baby home and she was fine at night for the night feeds and stuff. where it did and still does affect her, is early mornings. She is an early riser at the best of times, and she is up the instant she hears DH or I in the mornings, so same thing with Sebastian. If he cries/wakes up after 5am, then the WHOLE HOUSE is up at 5am (eeergh!). Anyway, their rooms are right next to each other (ie they share a wall) and she was fine at night. Good luck!

I think it depends on the individual child. DD was 2.5 when we bought Alex home and their bedrooms were right next door to one another. She would sleep through anything, even when he was going though a phase of having night terrors that consisted of 45 mins of screaming. She is a fantastic little sleeper, I think you could drop a bomb on her and she would sleep through it! DS on the other hand is a light sleeper and is easily woken by noise from his sister, so it is her that has to tiptoe around when he is asleep. Oh well cant win em all!

Our newborn is waking our toddler up at night At first Nina would wake to every noise Emily made, but the last 2 nights have been better and Nina has only woken once. I'm hoping Nina will get use to the noise and start sleeping through again.

Same here.....toddler woke the (then) newborn. Still happens now......during daytime naps, the older ones tend to wake the young one.

Same here, im sure after awhile DD will get used to her brother crying and he will get used to her making noise in the day. I found with DD when she was a baby to not tip toe around her and she would sleep through anything so hopeing it will be the same for DS when I bring him home with DD running around etc.

#1 was 20 months old when I had #2. They shared a room and it was no problem. Neither one woke the other. I was always surprised how noisy the older one could be before the younger would even flinch.
