When does frequency of poos change in breastfed baby?
I know in the early days you get a pooey nappy almost every change but I've read lots of comments that breastfed babies sometimes only have a poo every few days. When does it change from the all the time thing to the every few days thing? DD3 is pooing less and less, but she seems to really uncomfortable before each one - lots of squirming, little cries and grunts which can go on for an hour or two. When it finally comes its mustard yellow and most very much liquid but with some "chunky" bits in it (sorry - hope nobody's eating!). There is a lot of wind that comes with it too. Poor little thing seems to be kept awake or is woken by all the squirming and what looks to me like discomfort.
Is this normal? I have no experience with a "normal" breastfed baby so don't know if she has a problem or if its just what they do.
It is different all round.
DD1 was a poo every feed - without fail - until almost 2! DD2 would go hours and hours, usually on one poo a day, until 12months old, now it varies between 2-3 a day to none for 2 days.
What you are describing is totally normal to me. It is exceptionally unusual for a BF bub to be constipated, but they do get gassy - which can be caused by all sorts of things like too much air when feeding, your diet for example.
You can try giving her a warm deep bath every day, lots of leg kicking around on the floor with you, letting her move around will help get things going. Massaging her tummy gently, in clockwise circles, and cycling legs can help too.
All in all though, she may maintain her current feedoo ratio, it may change, it may change every week, they are all different. If you go more than 4 days without a poo and she is in pain or straining, or there is blood in her stools, then I would start to be concerned.
dd is exactly the same Lulu. ive started using infants friend. and when feeding i burb her pretty early in the feed and aim to get a decent burb, then continue feeding, sometimes we burb 2-3 times a feed. i think hopfully if we can get the air out then less will need to come out the other end. plus alot of our play time involes me cycling her legs and 'pumping' out the air..not that she realises...she has a ball.
Sounds exactly like my ds, lulu. Thankfully he only goes every 4-5 days now, but I know hours before hand he's going to do it. He still gets quite uncomfortable and will be very restless if it's over night. Not sure how you go about fixing as I've tried quite a few ideas now. I guess that's why I'm do happy it's not as frequent anymore!

Our DD stopped the 'poo in every nappy' around 8 weeks or so. She now does a massive poo around 3am when she's sleeping. arghh! And she's pulling all nighters now, so it's waking her up and hey, she may as well have a feed etc. I'm trying to tell her to do poos in the daytime.
