great thread! i have been reading up trying to find some good hints too!
We have a pretty smooth sail in the evenings. we feed L first at around 5.00/5.30 then she has a play in the kitchen with some saucepan lids while i put together our dinner (usually pasta...or some kind of instant polenta with a vege ragu). i then put that on a low low simmer (or if it's a roast just quickly shoved in...if you parboil the veges before you roast them they cook roughly at the same time as the chook...). then, L has a quick bath or a massage so that she is ready for her last booby at around 6.30pm.
usually her night-time ritual takes 1/2 hour which is perfect timing for dinner as when i come out i chuck in the pasta into the water and wait 8 minutes and voila ready by 7.15pm.
On some nights however we do eat together, so around 5.30/6.00pm. this is usually if i have made a meal that L can eat with us (like spag bog or a frittata)...i have found that this is really convenient for it all to be out of the way and nice to eat together...if this happens i usually start cooking around 5.00pm.
HTH babe!
p.s. i was a slooooow eater too!! he he he!
Is there maybe something you could do to encourage H to eat a bit faster? i remember that i hated dinner time as it meant bath and bed straight afterwards, and that's not much fun! maybe if there is a slightly earlier dinner time, H could hang out with you for a bit afterwards, just to break the dinner bath and bed association...??
Hi there i know what boat your in as my DH is away all week and i have to do it on my own aswell.
This is our routine, 4.30 get dinner on, 5.15 eat altoghter, 6 shower or bath, both boys shower or bath together, 6.45 ds2 has bottle and goes to bed, 6.55 ds1 in bed has story and goes to sleep 7.15
Rest of the night is mine
I get home from work about 5:45. DH has already been at home with Claire for 30-45 minutes. Pretty much straight away she wants some booby, so I do that for her.
We usually get dinner started just after 6. Usually I have something pre-made for Claire, but sometimes she'll have what we're eating. So we eat together, otherwise she wont eat much (if she doesnt see us eating too). If I cook her something diffent to what we're having, I make sure it something easy like pasta and frozen veggies, pumpkin soup.. something that cooks quickly and I dont have the actively watch it while cooking. The pasta I get for her cooks really quickly, so thats handy.
I get the bath going about 7:00 - 7:15ish. Claire has a bath and then DH gets her dressed for bed. We then read a book, play with some blocks, and then she has a bottle of milk and goes to bed about 8:00, sometimes closer to 8:30.
On the days that I am at home, I get some of my prep done earlier so I can start dinner earlier.
If DH isnt at home, I make sure I have something alreay cooked for her that I just need to heat up. Or I just heat up some soup from a can for her. Sometimes I need to give her a box of sultanas or a tub of yoghurt or something to keep her going while I prepare dinner for her.
