Gap between DD's two top front teeth?

Hi, as the title suggests my DD has a gap between her middle 2 top teeth. It's rather large at almost 3mm wide. Did anyone elses child have this? did it close when more teeth came through? Did it cause issues with other teeth coming through? If it didn't close did it cause speech issues (eg a lisp)?

I'm quite concerned because one of my teeth sits back and causes me to lisp. I'm VERY conscious of it and can usually get around it but will forget when I'm tired or not concentrating on my speech. I don't want DD to have one too

My DD is 3, and she has a large gap between her two front teeth. But I would say hers is more like 5mm. She does seem to have a slight lisp.

I'm not holding my breath for my DD to grow out of hers, as it seems to be hereditary - her uncle and grandfather (paternal side) both have an identical gap!

Having said that, I do believe it is something than can adjust itself when the adult teeth start coming in (when not as extreme and hereditary as my DD).

EDIT: was curious, so went and measured my DD's gap. Looks like I was overestimating - her gap is about 3-4mm. Just thought I'd add that!

I have been told that it's better for littlies to have a gap in their front teeth, it means there is more room for movement when their adult teeth come through and that they are less likely too have crooked front teeth (from them pushing in on each other).

DD1 has a big gap b/w her top teeth too but i've been told it's fine.

My little sister had a gap in her baby teeth, and also a gap in her adult teeth, until they all came through, and now it's closed and she has perfect teeth!. She also had a lisp but out grew it.

I didn't have a gap and my teeth ended up overcrowded and needed some removed and braces.

I think having a gap would probably be a good thing as it might leave a little extra room.....but don't quote me!

My sister had a large gap when she was younger and has since closed up mostly.

Exactly what I think too. I had a gap when I was little and then once all the adult teeth came through the gap closed and I have perfectly straight teeth and have never had any braces or plates.

Thanks so much for all the replies. It has put my mind at ease heaps. I feel I missed out on a bunch of opportunities because of my lisp and I don't want DD to do the same. Hoping she gets DP's teeth because everyone asks if he's had braces, sooooooooo perfect! Really could do without an orthodontist's bill

spot on!!! tis much better this way!!!
baby teeth generally start to move around 5 to accommadate the adult teeth, so you may find this happens with the rest when shes older!!

lol, i was just talking to mum and she said stop being a worry wart. so glad it could be normal. hmmm, so now i can silently giggle at all the biatchy mums who keep pointing it out and say how perfect their child's teeth are.

My DS now 3.5 had a gap between his teeth. He now has all of his baby teeth and they have moved together and he has no gap. DD (almost 2) also has a gap.. which im gathering will do the same.
DS has a lisp.. but i dont think its the teeth that are causing it as DD doesnt have one.

Thanks ShootingStar! it's a lisp i'm really worried about. I think I'm more worried because basically she's listening to me talking all the time so she might get it off me. My mother and younger sister also have one so maybe just the way we learn to talk? This mummy business really can get stressful hey?

No one in our family other than DS have a lisp. So yeh not too sure. DS's is getting better all the time. Ive watched videos of him younger and boy did it stand out. So im hoping hes actually growing out of it. But if you find she does start to develope a lisp, just make sure you get her name on the waiting list for speech theorapy before shes 2. After that the wait is forever. DS is on the waiting list, has been since he was 2.5 . Havent heard anything and hes nearly 4.
Oh definately can be stressful.. but just think.. there are alot of very sucessful people out there who have lips But as for her teeth, im sure they will correct themselves as all her teeth come though like my DS's did.

My DD has a large gap on top but is already showing the signs of the family trait of overcrowded lower jaw. I look at pics of me when I was younger and I had the same 2 issues. The top resolved but my bottom teeth are still over crowded.

ShootingStar, thanks for the heads up on speech therapy. If I notice anything I'll get on top of it straight up!

Ezymay, not real worried about cosmetic appearance but come to think of it all my side have smaller jaws so overcrowding happens. In-Laws not so sure becase FIL has falsies and MIL..... oh eeek. ok, now i really hope she gets DP's teeth.

When I took DD (3.5 years) to the dentist they are worried that because her teeth are all very close together that she will have to have extractions done when her adult teeth come through as they are normally bigger than the milk teeth. So to have a gap with milk teeth is a good thing. Most kids I see do have gaps.

Was reading I should take her to the dentist for a check before 2 so i guess I'll have to see when more teeth come through what it looks like. now i look around more i see heaps of kids with gaps too. i guess it isn't all that bad
