I have munchie cot rail covers and they come with Velcro straps to keep them strapped on.
A friend of mine did actually have to saw her cot in half to get her daughters leg out... She put her in a bed after that.

DS is still in a sleeping bag and doesn't seem to have issues with getting his legs/arms stuck.
