I have just watched the latest episode of Private Practice and I am absolutely reeling with disapproval.
In the episode there is a mother and three children. Her eldest has autism, which she suspects is from when he was vaccinated for MMR. Her middle child manages to have contracted the measles and as such the paed is trying to convince her to vaccinate her youngest.
Now don't get me wrong, I have and will continue to vaccinate Alexander - because DF is very Science minded and there is no arguing with him and vaccinations. It annoys me no end that he won't look at research with me but I have given up, for now. Anyway....
She is refusing and talking about how her eldest used to be such a bright and bubbly child and then when they V'd him he began disaplying characteristics of autism. He goes off to consult with the rest of the practice and they have the gall to say "Call child services as it is CHILD ABUSE to NOT vaccinate".
I am livid! I understand that perhaps there are proven results with vaccines, and that a doctor having been educated the way they are can make their decision to feel so adamant about the advances of vaccinations, however, I think it is TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE for them to call in child abuse. Not to mention the blatant disregard for the parents feelings and then complete dismissal of their relevant previous encounter with the MMR vaccine.
The poor parent can demonstrate what has happened to her child. And she had to live with that for however many years. She is probably racked with guilt and shame and who knows what, and yet the way she was treated WRT her personal opinion is despicable.
I cannot believe that television writers and producers are allowed to to undermine the knowledge, experiences and opinions of parents like this. It is one thing for a REAL medical show to have evidence based supports for their opinion, but this is a trashy girly drama for crying out loud.
I am in utter disbelief. I just don't think they should be allowed to finalise controversial production without a suitable retalliation from the 'opposing team'.
