    Too much water??

I know its a good thing that DD is drinking lots of water and i am happy but how much is too much? She will drink up to 2.5 litres a day , some days..plus 2 cups of milk. She has created a funny sound that means water and will bring us her cup. She drinks fast and most of the time empties the cup all at once. Lots of wet nappies and wet pyjamas. I stop giving her water after dinner but she has figured out which of her bath toys hold water and will drink from these..in the bath. If the toys arent there she sucks the wash cloth or slurps water up by putting her face to the water.
Two people have said possible diabetes but she has no other symptoms.... should i be seeing a professional or just relax about it??

Mez, there is nothing wrong with going and getting a check up just for peice of mind.
Diabeties is a possible cause of increase thirst, but there are other less common things too.
The main concern with drinking loads of water is that it dilutes all the bodies other electrolytes and that in turn can cause problems.
How much sugar and salt is in her diet? these too can also cause incresed thirst.
The other thing is how active is she? if she is running around constantly she will be gettng thirst coz of that, think about when you do heaps of exercise or are much busier than normal, your thirst increase
2.5L is a lot for a little girl i would have thought. although thinking about it MJ probably drinks a little less than that BM in a 24hr period

Hopefully its just that she is very active and enjoys her water

That does sound like a lot of water for a 1 year old to me. I think on the safe side, go to your GP and ask if she can be tested for diabetes.

It will probably be nothing but better safe than sorry and if it is diabetes, the earlier it is diagnosed, the better!

Good luck and I hope the outcome is positive!

I'd be concerned with this too and would definately go to your doctor. Especially seeing as she is so desperate as to drink out of her bath toys... My DS1 has always drunk lots of water, but never that much consistently like that.

Jack was drinking about this much too, he dropped off to about 1.5ltrs over winter and is probably still 1 litre + a day

I asked my CHN and dr and they all said it was good for him the only thing it may do is decrease his appetite a little

Thought i might pop into the 'good' medical centre today while i was at the shops, thinking it was a good time to go and all (i.e not in the morning and b4 school finished) but each doctor had a two hour wait. A two hour wait to ask a question... a two hour wait with a toddler that is into everything. I know i will have to do it but i think i will have to be prepared to go put my name down and come back.
Dont know why but thought id share that with you all

My eldest DS was always like this!!! Everyone would tell me to have him tested for diabetes, in the end, I caved in and got him tested. No diabetes, just a thirsty little guy! He is now 14 and still exactly the same. He takes a 2lt bottle of water to bed with him at night and drinks the lot throughout the night. All up he would drink around 4lts a day now. I just make sure he has enough salt in his diet too (we use celtic sea salt) because all that water can strip essential salts and minerals from your system.
I hope your little guy is fine. What a PITA having to wait so long to see a Dr. I hope next time you go, someone cancels and you get in quicker
