What is your view on ear piercing bubs?

I don't like it and haven't gotten my girls ear's pierced, but it is a HUGE PITA if your kids play sport because they have to take them out. My girls play netball and if I had a dollar for every pair of earings I've had to keep in my pocket during the game for one of their team mates I'd be rich. And then there was one girl who had to sit out the game because she'd only just had them done the day before and couldn't take them out yet.

IMO they are an unnecessary fashion statement and if they want them done they can do it when they are earning their own money to pay for it. But that said, I'd never begrudge anyone else the right to get their children's ears pierced :)

I had this convo with my friends a few weeks back... I said I would think about it when DD1 asked me about it...
And of course DD1 asked within days (she wasnt around when we talked before). She wanted to know what they were, I told her they were my earrings and her response was...

Are they like your special ring daddy gave you when you were married??

After my heart melted with how cute she is, I answred that yes they were.. She then said that she was happy to wait until a special time like that to get them done. Gotta love her.

When and if my daughter wants them done I will let her so my plan is to wait until she asks. I prefer that she choose to go as It's something she can dedide on herself and it may even be the first BIG decision of her life hehehe oh so much to look forward too....

My girls had their ears pierced at just under 4 months. No problems, no trouble, they both like them and I do too.

I vaguely remember when my Mum had her own ears pierced, it was her 30th Birthday!

I've never had my ears pierced, just not interested... maybe for my 30th lol.

My daughters will be allowed if they ask (I'm not going to be bringing it up or anything) around 10-13, not sure exactly.

DH and I were talking about this quite recently.

DH was of the opinion that we should get them done whilst DD was young so that she wouldn't remember that it hurt and to 'get it over and done with'. I on the other hand remember how much it hurt to have my ears pierced (I originally had them done at about 7, but one said got infected so I had to wait for it to close up before getting it done again, I then had numerous other holes put in once I was over 18). I will therefore wait until DD asks to have them done (whatever age that may be, I don't mind if it's youngish). I guess that is the other thing, I mentioned to DH that she might not want her ears pierced, but he felt that most girls have their ears pierced so she would probably want hers done too.

Oh, and I don't mind the look of ear rings on babies. I just don't want to have to possibly deal with any infection and the pain whilst she is young and doesn't understand why her ears hurt.

We've been trying to convince DSD to get them done for about 18 months - the plan was it could be a 10th birthday present..... we took her once... she freaked out.... (obviously we didn't end up stabbing her then...) and it was third time lucky.... it appears her mother had been telling her it would "hurt so bad and you'll freak out and it will be terrible... stupid woman...

anyway DSD is now SOOO happy to have them (she has been desperate for ages!) and she is looking after them herself and so far no problems.
I had mine done for my 9th birthday and I think I too was more than capable of making that decision and looking after them.

I don't see any problem with getting them done as a baby.... but I think the bigger issue you have here is that you and DP have very different opinions. That's something that you both need to come to terms with first - my feeling would be that if he doesn't want it, then you probably can't force the issue. Maybe you can convince him - or negotiate, but I agree with the others who have said not to do it behind his back - that's just fraught with danger!!

I'm against it. I don't like the idea of inflicting pain on a baby for cosmetic reasons. I think they have beautiful little ears that don't need holes put in them without them being able to choose for themselves. My dd can have them when she is old enough to ask for them, know the risks and take care of them. I work at a school and I can tell which little girls have had their ears pierced as babies. I'm not a fan, I think it is totally unnecessary.

I got mine done when I was 5 and asked if I could, I think that was too early and my parents should've made me wait a little while longer.

I would never do it to my girls. I'm not sure what age I would let them. But whenever I think they are mature enough to make that choice and get what it means I guess, I think it will be over 10yrs old. It is only a fashion accessory, not something that they HAVE to eventually get done, so I would never just do it for them without knowing if that's what they want.

I grew up in a culture and household where girl's ears are pierced quite early and I think it's cute. I would do it for my daughters-if they choose to discontinue wearing them later in life it's their choice. I prefer d tiny studs and not loops that can be pulled.

not trying to start anything but this can just mean a inexperienced person doing the piercing.. not because they had it done young. all 3 of my children's holes are even and fine.

Each to their own i say.
Dsd got them done at 5 at her request, they were only cleaned while she was at our house & ended up with multiple infections so they had to be removed & let close over, she is now so afraid of the infections which she says hurt much worse than the actual piercing getting done, that despite her desire to redo them shes too afraid.
Ive had gun & needle piercings in my ears & face & found the gun to be much quicker & pain free than needle piercings, but then i didnt think the ears hurt at all. The needle actually removes a piece of skin from you for the hole & takes longer to grow over if you change your mind. Dd loves my earrings & touches them asks about them then says 'my turn', the only reason i havent let her have a turn is the ongoing problems weve had with ear infections, wax, fluid etc, once thats all sorted if she continues to ask, ill take her to have it done.
Maybe its my upbringing, i had multiple piercings in each ear by 14, but i just dont see ear piercing as an issue.

As a pp said, I think the main issue is that you discuss this with your dh and try to agree on the issue. If there is disagreement then I wouldn't even consider it. You need to hear each others views and make a decision together.

I am of Italian background too and my ears were pierced as a baby. It was expected from my family that I would have my DD's ears pierced as a baby too but DH and I decided we wouldn't do it and that we would have it done when and if DD wants to have them. She is almost five and has asked questions recently about how it is done. At the moment she says she wants to have them when she is a big schoolgirl lol (which is next year). Once she has made it clear to us that she definitely wants them we will make a decision about it.

Can I just add if you want to minimize infection try medical plastic piercing and then titanium earrings. Nickel causes infection and even expensive gold and silver earrings have nickel.

DD won't be getting hers done til she's much older. I want her to be able to understand that there's a commitment to looking after them, so I'll see when she starts asking and explain it then. DH thinks 13 is a good age, as a growing up and going to high school thing. I think that sounds nice :)

As for others, their choice. Just because I don't want it for my DD doesn't mean I don't think you should do it for yours. I do think though that both parents should agree.

I feel really strongly against it. I would never deliberately inflict pain on my child simply because it looks "cute". I actually think it's bizarre that it's culturally acceptable to do so. Until a child is old enough to fully comprehend the concept of potential pain, old enough to clean/care for the piercings properly themselves & specifically make an informed request to have the piercings done, no way. I also agree babies are perfectly gorgeous just the way they are! They don't need bling!

i want to wait for my girls to want to get it done. i still remember the day that i got mine and it was just a super happy memory. it was my 9th birthday present and all that joy!!! fabulous! such a happy memory and so happy that i have it to remember ITMS.

I do piercing and won't do it til they are 5. Number 1 reason is that ears can grow and are never even, I have had to re pierce lots of ears that were done young and ended up uneven. Number 2 reason at 5 most understand not to pull them, seeing a little toddler with a ripped earlobe is not nice.
I have had lots of mums get angry at me because I won't take their money and do it ;)

I won't get DDs done now because of this. I was considering it but didn't think about growing ears, repiercing etc... I want DD to understand that it will hurt and not to touch them.
I got my firsts at 9 years old! I still remember the pain and noise of the gun..

If I were you, I wouldnt do it simply because your DH is so against it.
I think your hubby has as much right as you to an opinion where cosmetic issues are concerned, and if he is strongly against it, you should probably respect that.
When all is said and done, as minor as it is, it is still a "medical"procedure, one which does carry some very minor risk of infection.
I would be upset if my DH went and gave my DS a radical haircut, sure the hair will grow back, but at the end of the day, I have to look at him.
I think decsions like this need to be made together, as once done, cannot be undone (yeah, I know you can take the earings out, but the fact that you ignored your DH cant be undone KWIM?)

I asked my 10 year old daughter if she regretted her modification and thought it was cruel? Her response? She laughed! "It's not cruel mum. I like it. And if I didn't like it I'd take them out."

And then she went on to tell me about this book she started reading for school about how the girl in it was tortured by her step mother because the step mother was jealous and how that is cruel.

But the smartest thing she said of all... "I don't know anyone who hates their parents because of pierced ears mum."

I can totally understand that it may not be visually appealing to some, or that it's a rite of passage. I get that. But to insinuate its cruel. Yeah ok. I think a lot of things people do with their kids impacts negatively like how they parent, what they put into their kids mouths, how much time they spend with their kids. But I don't look at a little girl with pierced ears and immediately think "Quick! Call DOCS! Those parents are cruel!" Yeah no.

Haha wow!! I really have stirred the pot a bit! Very grateful for all your opinions though :) I think I still will get DD's ears pierced younger but maybe wait till she's a little older like closer to
12 or 18 months.
