I would guess that if you were leaving Telstra it would be a lot more I'm guessing that they have charged you for the handset and seeing as you're staying with them and upgrading then they have taken that into consideration.
Just to let you know that the iphone gets a bit hot with a long call too but I ear the earpiece a lot
i have left a contract with 3.. to a new contract with 3. only had a few months left and from memory they just charged me the monthly $$ that we spend each month x how many remaining months there were.
i would say telstra is different because they are generally more expensive than anyone else. (not a fan of telstra)
with telstra they have two levels of breaking contract. a pen1 (or first teir penalty) is when you are breaking your contract and paying it over the duration of the contract term. a pen2 (or total penalty) is where you're paying it all out in a lump sum. the bulk of contracts now have the pen1 (monthly installments) and pen 2 (lump sum) adding up to the same - and it can work out less than the value of the contract remaining (is usually worked out to cover the value of the phone - if you got a less expensive phone it will be less). if you got your phone in july last year, you'd have a fair amount of time left still.
do you have a cap phone plan (phone free) or a cap plan with phone replayment option (MRO) and were they doing the penalty for breaking the cap plan or the phone. if you have an MRO, all you'd be doing is paying out the value of the handset - your plan would be able to be recontracted without penalty
Re heating up - my iPhone does get quite hot, but generally after about half hour of talking or games, or any other constant use.
Something else to note with iPhones, and this is really my only complaint, is that the battery runs down SO fast! I charge mine every night, because if I don't it'll run out the next day. If you're playing games or making calls, it'll run out in a day. If you're not using it, it'll run down in about a day and a half.
Apart from that, I don't know how I lived before my iPhone

Anyone broken a mobile phone contract early?
