    Help with Insurance question

We have combined home and contents insurance.
Ive just discovered by accident that our policy lists us as having something we don't have ( not an item, you know the screening questions like do you have iron bars on the windows, do your doors lock etc) this would normally only apply to a contents policy, and relates to security/break in

We've noticed something that is very likely a building fault ( our house is still covered by builders warranty) and when we contacted them they said to go to our insurer and get them to do an evaluation of the damage and what caused it, and if they are at fault they will fix it.

    1) I'm wondering if our insurer assessor says it's their fault they could turn around and send out their own and who knows what they will say

    2) I'm petrified that if I call our insurer, even though it's a potential building ins claim (no contents) they will say that because there's inaccurate info on the contents part they will void the policy entirely.

I don't remember if I gave them the info or if it's a mistake on their part. It would not be the first mistake on our policy.

So what do I do? Go out an make modifications I can't afford because they recorded something wrong on the policy?

Correct them? And if I do that will they not cover our building claim anyway?

Will they inspect that sort of thing at all given it's potentially only a building claim? And even if it was contents it would be unrelated?

Cos I'm sure they work on the premise that if there's anyway possible to not make a claim they will take it

i would say that you were looking at your policy as a result of the claim you're about to make, and noticed that the mistake was on there - you know you told them the truth (as i said earlier, i was told to shrug it off when i rang mine) - put it on them

If its still under builders warranty they need to do something. You can contact your insurer and get them to come and look at it but should be up to the builder.

That's what thought, but they're saying they don't have to do the assessment, our insurer has to?

Call your insurer then but I'm pretty sure the builders warranty insuer is the one that would have to assess. Your insuer will be able to tell you. They should give u assistance

They can't void the policy unless it was a fraudulent statement, and they can't decline the claim if it is not related to the mistake/ incorrect statement in your proposal.
If it was related to the mistake, they might be able to reduce the amount paid, but otherwise they can't. You should let them know though, just in case you need to make a claim later that is related to the item in question. In some cases you may need to pay an additional premium (esp. if it relates to security features on the house).
Can discuss in more detail if you want to PM me.
