I'd give your DH the benefit of the doubt - every time we've had these stupid vague 'personal business matter' phone calls it's been some annoying telemarketer type firm that wants to try to talk us into share-trading or futures-trading or something like that - people are usually more upfront if they're after you for unpaid bills, IME anyway.
