    After birth bleeding

    Hi,

I didnt know where to put this, but its an after the birth question.

I had my baby 3 1/2 wks ago. After having a slight temp and passing 2 big clots, i was put on 2 antibiotics on day 2. On saturday (2 wks 6 days after the birth) my bleeding basically stopped, it was brown and i had very light spotting occassionally.

Last night i felt something come out so i went to the toilet and the bleeding had started again. Ive been feeling it come out today but im not flooding pads or anything. Its just that its back to being bright red again and a couple of hours ago i had a small clot.

I just want to know if its normal to slow right down and have it go brown, only to get heavier again and go bright red?

    Thanks for your help

    hi kristi,

This sounds kinda similar to what happened to me after having DD - turned out there was soem placenta left inside me and I had to have a d n c.

I'd pop down to the doc as this can become very serious.

    Good luck xx

kristi how is BFing going? If you have retained placenta your milk supply can really take a hit, because the placenta coming away is one of the things that causes the hormonal surges that bring your milk in.

Have you been doing to much recently? My bleeding had slowed right down at 3 weeks and i went out for a longish walk, got stuck across town with the buses not running and had to walk back with DD in the wrap, and got myself over-tired and my bleeding came back on again red and stayed for another few weeks going through the whole tailing off thing again. My MW put it down to the long walk and stress.

Give your midwives a call and talk to them about it, see what they say.

It's hard to say. When I was at hossy I was told if the bleeding went brown then back to red you should see your doctor. My health nurse who is a nurse and a midwife said it's perfectly normal for that to happen. I have no idea who is right.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your replies.

I am going to the dr in the morning to get it looked at.

hoobley- My milk supply is very low at the moment, im trying to build it up. I went to the shops on tuesday, which i havent really been out since i came home, but the bleeding started up again the night before i did that.

It's very likely that once this is resolved your milk will come in properly hun. Hang in there! Best of luck at the docs tomorrow.

I went to the drs today and he said its not uncommon to bleed for a couple of months after giving birth. (The most i have ever bled for after a birth is 3 wks).

He wasnt concerned that it had gone to brown and stopped, then started up again bright red.

I guess i will just have to keep an eye on it.

    Thanks for your advice
