If you had RPOC and a subsequent infection...

How was it treated? A little over a week ago my bleeding went from barely there to medium to heavy again, and over the course of two days I passed a number of livery looking pieces of tissue about the size of a thumbnail. Now for the last 4 or so days I've had cramps, a medium-high temp (anywhere from 37-38 degrees, so not super high), a bad smelling discharge and the most concerning for me, I feel like I'm burning up and about to combust from the inside. I'm constantly covered on sweat and having one continuous hot flush. I had these exact symptoms when I got PID after a d&c. So I think I have a uterine infection. I've just seen a doctor and he gave me a script for a broad spectrum antibiotic. My question is, how we're you treated? I'm wondering whether I should see another gp tomorrow and see if it's worth them doing a swab, finding out exactly what the infection is and treating it with a targeted antibiotic?

Also, breastfeeding and antibiotics. What do I need to do for DD2? I'm taking probiotics, should I give her the children's one? How can I prevent thrush on my nipples?

I haven't had an infection from retained products but have had PID and was treated with Flagyl and keflex.

The only person I know personally who had retained product had to get taken into hospital for treatment, and to get it all out.

So I personally would call nurse on call, and find out if I needed to go straight in.

    I hope you're ok, hun

A friend of mine had it and an infection, I'll see if she can come and reply.. I know she ended up in hospital.. Re; the probiotics, baby biocueticals (sp?) are good, I used them for DS all the time as he had thrush ongoing.. You can either put it on the nipple or mix with ebm to make a past and paint the tongue.. (or put in a bottle or food if thats relevant).

At the very least I'd be asking for a scan to see if there is anything else left in there. If there is still stuff in there, it needs to come out. The abx will treat the infection, but it won't *fix* the problem if there is still product in there. You may need a D&C hun

After DD I had retained products and knew from the discharge that I had an infection. I was sent for an ultrasound and the Dr tried to put me on Flagyl. He knew I was Breastfeeding but apparently didn't care to inform me I'd have to stop. (Its not recommended to take them when bfing) So I refused to take those and he prescribed a broader and safer AB and I was sent for a d and c.

I hope you're starting to feel better very soon xox

Oh man I really don't want to have another d&c again ever Definitely will go to the GP tomorrow then, it was a locum service and he didn't seem to know much about birth or post partum. I'll ask for a scan and go from there. I'm thinking there must still be something in there as the bleeding tapers off and then starts up again. I'm feeling like crud and sweating like there no tomorrow and I feel like I'm on fire, but my temp is only 37.2. Ugh. Thanks guys.

I'm really really worried about my milk being affected and losing it. Or DD2's gut being compromised by the antibiotics. Ugh ugh ugh.

You definitely need a scan huni. Is there anything you can take like paracetamol to bring down your temp. As I said on fb its horrible. Huge huge hugs I hope you don't have to have a d&c and start feeling better soon x

Thanks, I'm waiting for the doctors surgery to open so I can call. I woke up feeling relatively fine today which makes me worry I'm overreacting, but I guess if it was someone here I wouldn't hesitate to tell them to go to the doctor, or if my kids were sick I would take them in straight away.

An infection could be contributing to you feeling so down too. Hope you can see someone today.

Any issues to bub will only be in the very short term. Maybe you could get onto a milk donor to help you out?

Hopefully Cassius or Indadhanu See this thread as they both had issues of retained product after birth and they can tell you what their treatment was. I am fairly sure from memory they avoided a D&c
I hope you feel better soon.

You can get powder probiotics for bubs, and probiotics for you too xx

I personally find that while being sick hurt my supply, it came back, and the anti-bs didn't hurt it.

The quicker it's sorted out, the less interference with supply, IMO.
