FB discussion amongst friends about One Born Every Min

Interesting convo.....a fb friend who is preggy just posted about being horrified after watching OBEM - unfortunately it was the US one on Austar. Anyway, some interesting discussion occurred, I suggested she look at the UK on online to get a better perspective of positive birth experiences and a home birthing fb told her never to watch the US one again.

What a shame there are such negative programs to terrify new mums.

Suggest she checks out 'The business of being born', or some homebirths on you-tube.

I think she's freaked out totally -When I suggested having a look at the UK one online in comparison she replied 'no way she was never watching anything like that ever again'.

But I;ve just suggested it anyway.

Poor thing, how far along was she? Maybe suggest that she read birth stories first and then watch videos - I have always been a little squeamish, but after reading some birth stories I was okay seeing birth videos... and even used the mirror whilst birthing DD!

I haven't seen the US one. I find the UK partners horrifying - one guy late last year was humming along to his video game while his wife was contracting - you know where I would have shoved that console...?

oh dear :S Definitely the Business of Being Born is a great watch! Also, a woman on FB has just had a book of positive birth stories published that is really wonderful - I've read it and would recommend it to ANY pregnant woman to read. The book is called Birth Journeys and there's a FB page for it

Okay...only 15 mins in but as far as I can tell, one of the women is borderline hysterical, sobbing from before contractions start. The other has an emergency of some sort during a vaginal birth. Probably not two very comforting examples.

Yep all good docos mentioned. Honestly though, at the end of the day, preparing for a positive birth experience is not a difficult or unobtainable task these days, with so many resources on hand (Internet etc), so it's really up to her how much she involves and informs herself. Right now, she seems to be choosing to have a very negative and uninvolved approach to labour an childbirth, and as good as those docos are, unless she actually wants to empower and inform herself, they'll likely be water off a ducks back. Unfortunately if she's going Ito it with the mindset of 'omg it's so scary and dangerous' she is likely going to perpetuate that outcome.

I've only sen the uk one - and having never had a baby I must admit at times it's pretty freaky to watch! I find the screaming the most off putting thing! I have told myself I will NOT be a screamer......which of course means I probably will be!!!
Having said that, I am still obsessed with the show - but I will endeavour to watch your recommendations ladies - if I ever actually get there....

Yeah, cos birth in the UK is a really good experience... try having one where people aren't being filmed so really couldn't care less. Sorry, but bigging up the UK birth industry will get me in saying they really don't deserve any praise.

(UK freebirth coming up ASAP - minimum of 10 months wait!)
