If all's well you can up and leave as soon as you want. And in public hospitals they're sometimes busy and will try and get you to leave within a few hours.
I was going to leave right away after DD, but then had PPH so stayed 2 nights. They wanted me to stay another, but it was christmas and they took pity on me. With DS I was private and ended up staying 6 nights, which was way too long in the end.

With DD2, I stayed 24 hours after the birth. Basically as soon as the midwives had done their thing, I was discharged.
I had second degree internal tearing, no other complications, if I hadn't have been given the epi and spinal I would have been able to leave about 12 hours sooner.

With Moo I stayed overnight, with Buster I left early afternoon after having him not long past midnight. Though I had been in hospital since the previous afternoon.

DD1 I stayed for 2 days (although they shouldnt have discharged me thanks to her health, considering we were back in there after two days and her being too sick but thats another story altogether)
DD2 had her at 3am and was home by mid morning (after an hour drive)

This time round I plan on being there the min 4hrs, if not less.

Yup, my birth centre had a 4hr discharge - that is the earliest they would let you go. With both boys I ended up staying in due to meconium - 2 nights for DS1 and 1 night for DS2 for them to be monitored, which I was completely happy with.

To be honest, I'd love to have stayed in longer with DS2, just to have the quiet time to get to know him, rest, have meals brought to me etc. Yes, I did miss DS1 during the 30 hours or so I was in there, but he was brought into visit me once. I am actually considering going private next time in order to get the longer hospital stay - but that's a story for another thread.
