depends on the type of high you want. I could not imagine smoking it straight in labour. It would buzz me out totally... If I remember correctly it can give quite a kick with no tobabcco... But eating takes longer to come on but can last for longer... Let us know what your research comes up with...

Here is quite a lengthy article / chapter on Cannabis use as pain relief...

    http://www.humanhemphealth.ca/Russo-AAPM_chapter.pdf

EDIT interestingly the article talks about synthetic THC being produced by drug companies for pain relief!!!

    I wouldn't use it because I didn't like it.
I was reading about cannabis and breastfeeding the other day and it said that THC can be detected in the babies urine 3 weeks after they were exposed to it in breastmilk. They are not capable of breaking it down like adults are. That can't be good in my opinion, and I would imagine that it is just as bad for an unborn baby. I am talking regular use, of course.
Opiates do cross the placenta and are addictive if taken regularly, but do not cause pathological changes. In other words you won't get cancer or other cellular damage from pethadine, morphine or even heroin. So technically they are safe for the baby as long as taken in controlled amounts.

I certainly am not condemning anyone who smokes, it seems like most of us on here have at some point. I do however feel that pot can be much more damaging than we ever give it credit for and its use should not be taken lightly.
Personally I would say eating is worse as you don't know quite how much you have taken for some time after having taken it so it is easy to take too much. Smoking is worse as far as cancer etc, but that isn't really an issue if you are just having it for labour. Just don't spin it if you don't want tobacco.

Almost all illegal drugs were originally intended for something positive for mankind, they have just been abused and given a bad name. Doing anything in small amounts near the end of a pregnancy is unlikely to cause any long term problems, so I guess it is up to the individual.

I've never tried it cos it scares me. Only had pot, mushies and an E.
LOL missymoo. Maybe LSD use was just less prevalent during your teen years?

Ruf - I wasn't personally thinking of using it whilst in labour... more along the lines to induce - as you know, VBAC's can't have the synthetic drugs pumped into you because of high risk - which leads to the question also, if its been known to induce labour - what effect would the type of contractions started by pot do to a c-section scar, as opposed to syntocin?

I think its all quite interesting! And now I'm off to read that article.. lol

ETA - geez candice its 21 pages long.. rofl.. maybe I'll try to read it when DS isn't banging his head on my arm for some unknown temper tantrum reason.

mel thats interesting most ppl i know only smoke it mixed and my friend the other day said when she smoked it green it made her way more high than mixed so maybe that could mean that u wouldnt need as much to use in the instance of pain relief

i think it totally depends on the person smoking or ingesting it to how it affects u as in the case of most drugs either prescribed or illicit eg peth helped me a lot where as it made my friend puke when in labour

It would never do me any good in labour.. I get giggly and silly!!!!!

In labour I like to be in control, and feel everything. My contraction is my focal point, and I would hate to lose that....

But my sister, panicked, and screamed and cried for a LONG time, and I think a little "high" would of done her the world of good... she needs calming more relaxing time than I do...

So maybe a munch on some cookies, (or choc fudge brownies ) in early labour will have a calming, slower acting effect????

Would love to know what you find girly!!!!

I think people forget to pack the cone smaller without tobacco. They are just more stoned because they had more pot. You don't get an immediate head spin without the tobacco either, that used to freak me out as a non tobacco smoker.

I think it burns better with tobacco too because of the added chemicals.

Mel, it is an interesting read but maybe not quite what you were after. I just found something more interesting about pot being contra-indicated with an epi if you need to have a cs (I bloody hope you don't) so I guess that is something to think about. If you go for a reefer and then later need something stronger, you *might* run into some problems. Will post a link when X stops screaming...

"A month later, while Kelly struggled to give birth, I asked Kelly's midwife what gave her the idea that pot might be good for pregnant women. I was presented with Susun Weed's book, Wise Woman's Herbal for the Childbearing Year.1

In it, Weed advises that cannabis is an "oxytocic herb" that "can help relax the controlling mind and bring attention to the needs of the body, as well as strengthen the needed contractions."1 Weed explains that cannabis, combined with hemostatic herbs like Witch Hazel or Lady's Mantle, can also slow uterine hemorrhages after birth.2

I feel guilty enough about the odd sip of wine I've had while pregnant so smoking a joint or chowing down on a hash cookie while preggers would really tip me over the edge! I also hate the stoned feeling with a passion so it's a definite NO WAY fom me.

All the drugs I have ever taken have been legal, but the majority have an illegal sibling or more, like codeine being an opiate. I do however think that used correctly (as with the legal drugs) cannabis has a lot more going for it than many other illegal drugs.

Having said that, I would avoid regular use of any drug. The withdrawls for baby are not nice to witness.
