u don't think they are too expensive?? i was quoted 500 it seems alot is it really worth it???
Hi Noni,
This is my first bub- so I don't have any info on the birth - yet!! But I attended calmbirth classes (same as hypnobirthing) in Bowral just a couple of weekends ago and I absolutely loved them. Whilst I wouldn't say I was petrified of birthing before i went to the classes I was definately fearful and very much in denial about learning and reading about birthing for fear of becoming scared.
Since then I have been practicing my breathing and mindfullness and it has brought me so close to my little unborn bub. It has also brought my DH much closer as they really get the dads involved in the classes. He was a bit apprehensive at first but came out loving the weekend.
The best quote I heard over the weekend was this " you don't run a marathon without doing some form of practice beforehand, nor do you even enter the water without knowing something about swimming - so why do we think we can enter birthing without knowing some basics". I feel so much more comfortable with my body and the birthing process that to be honest I can't wait for the birth now!!
Yes - approx $500 is alot but give it really strong consideration as I could not recommend it enough!!
Hope this helps a little......
Hi!
I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any hypnobirthing classes/courses avaliable in SA, Around Adelaide? I googled and came up with not much, also found an old post from 2005 which got the reply there wasn't anything like that in SA, but that was 2 years ago now, so.... hoping there might be something around now?
Failing that, book/reading reccommendations?
Thanks!
Linds........when I last checked there was still nothing in SA. There was a trial programme at W&C but I am not sure whether it went forward or not.
Worth giving the W&C a call perhaps?
Other than that, I recommend the Francesca Naish range of CD's......(PM me if you want more details..........)
I have the Marie Mongan hypnobirthing book-I have found it good to read so far. Not doing as much practice as I should so in that respect classes may be good.
It is called Hypnobirthing-the Mongan Method.

I found this copy on ebay if you were wanting second hand. There is a cd that comes with the original but I actually didn't like it and would probably use some quieter nature music instead.
I would like to do hypnobirthing for our 3rd bubba. I found a place that does classes, but they are in sydney, which is about 3hrs away from me. I tried to see if there were any in Newcastle but i can't seem to find any. If you were me would you make the trek? I really want to do it, but am unsure if it's...silly i suppose to go all that way for it. The classes are once a week for 4 weeks, at a night time. It's not really that fact its a fair way, but the fact its at night...
Hey Tegan, whilst I can't comment on hypnobirthing (being our first PG and all ;) ) but if you hunt down Yogababy I'm sure she'd have some answers for you ....
There HAS to be another option besides driving 3hrs (possibly six for a round trip) at night, here's hoping someone can help you find it ...
I have just been to my HB class, and I would travel interstate for the experience I had if I had to :)
Hey Tegan

absolutely it would be worth every travelling minute!!!! DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!
I didnt' do hypnobirthing but saw signs up in the hospital during my pregnancy and thought it looked like a good idea.
About 13 hours into my 17 hour labour the midwife stopped topping up my epidural so that i would be able to push with feeling. i wasn't happy about this at all and was freaking out about the pain i was in. My amazing midwife managed to call up an aneathetist to come and chat to me about the pain i was in. This anaethetist, unknown to me at the time, was also the man who held the hypnobirthing classes, he was incredible and talked me through the pain and taught me coping strategies to get through each contraction calmly, i was able to calmly cope with the pain til my son was born thanks to this amazing man and his hypnobirthing techniques.
Ever since i have said that if i were to ever have another baby i would definately do hypnobirthing classes as it made the world of difference to my birthing experience, i wish i had of known about it from the start of my labour then i may not have opted for the epidural.
GL with everything!
I used hypnobirthing for Nicholas and it was fantastic. I was only inlabour for just under 3 hours, and it was pretty intense, but I didn't panic at all, and ended up having a beautiful experience. It was also really good for relaxation during my pregnancy (I have anxiety) and for post pregnancy, especially while I was in hospital. I did the sessions with a psychologist at St John's Hospital in Subiaco (Perth).
I'm pretty sure there's a course that runs over a weekend (or a long weekend)that you go to - like a retreat or that are a full day course with support after ! I'll see if I can find it for you
I definately recommend a course like it.
I did it as well and highly recommend it! I was so calm and my labour was 3 1/2 hours and the most amazing experience of my life! I was wonderful.
You can buy the book without doing the classes... although I did find that the combination of reading the book and the classes for me was great. Go on the hypnobirthing website and email the Sydney person and see if they can put you onto someone in your area... and yes, the lady I did my course with did actually do weekend courses for people who had to travel from remote areas.
Hi
I've signed up for a birth skills (one yoga baby is referring to) weekend course and received the materials package (I assume it's same as what she sends out for distance program). I havn't been through everything yet, but it's pretty informative and includes relaxation CDs and instructions etc. I've tried the first CD out and I was definitely relaxed. A bit of practice and I reckon I could relax under pretty much any circumstances... well, hopefully ;)
Haven't actually done it yet, though, so can't offer advice on classes vs learn-on-your-own, but Shari does certainly get back to emails very quickly, so you wouldn't be totally on your own.
Good luck
Ok ... dumb question.... hypnobirthing??? Is it like meditation through the birth??
Hey Alicia
thats a great question?
HypnoBirthing is a method of relaxation, directed specifically to the pregnant/birthing woman. Its about having
- clear understanding of how the body births, and reducing fear
- natural birth and processes
- relaxation
- self awareness
- visualisation
This all contributes to a number of physical and pyschological 'health' for the expectant woman, with the goal of a postive birth experience (vaginal or c/s)
hope this helps
xx yogababy
sorry didn't mean to question mark
16month old hit the keyboard :
thats a great question?
it is a great question
xx yogababy
thanks yogababy - it is something I will look into... trying not to think that far ahead just yet, but it sounds great as the birth can be a scary thing LOL
I think reading the book would be ok but from my experience of my classes last weeked 90% of what I got out of it was the therapy session with the practitioner. I was intellectually aware of and accepting of all that was in the book and knew it back to front but it is another thing all together to sit with someone and discuss your fears about birth - fears I barely knew I had....
Hey all :)
Roryrory
I agree...you do get a great deal more out of the hypnobirthing course when you meet with the practitioner in a workshop or private session. However...not everyone has access to a practitioner :( so I would recommend the program pack as the next option :)
AliciaK
...birth is a little scary, but its also a wonderful, empowering experience :)
Marcellus
I think you and I are too meet in November ;)
xx yogababy
Natalie I definately agree! :)
So you all don't think it's silly to travel 3hrs to and 3hrs back(at night) to go to the classes?
Hey Tegan
it is a lot of travel...it may be ok for the first class, but committing to 4 weeks of 6hrs worth of travel may really take it out of you :)
if you are really motivated you can still get a great deal out of a distance program...with email and phone support. The program packs are designed to be used independently...and are very user friendly, manual, scripts, cd's
hope this helps
xx yogababy
if anyone is interested I would be more than happy to put up a few practitioner posts on HypnoBirthing :)
xx yogababy
Tegan, I would contact the person who is running the course and see if they do one over a weekend so you just go down once. I know the lady who ran the classes I went to told me that she does this for people who are in rural areas and can't make normal classes.
Aurora, I found reading the book after the classes was great cos it made me remember things so it was reinforcing it all. I know what you mean about fears you didn't know you had!
Hi,
Not sure where to post this so I will put it in a few threads. I am pregnant with my 2nd child and reading about hypnobirthing. I certainly like the tennants behind hypnobirthing, esp re the role of fear in labour and learning how to overcome this.
I would love to hear from anyone who has tried this method of birthing.
THanks,
Mich

Hi Michelle
with my first son , I used really intense imagery that helped me get through the labour, afterwards i heard of hypno birthing and realised that was sort of what I'd been doing!!I used imagery of each contraction was a wave rolling in....then rolling out as the pain went away. I also imagined a flower opening up (hoping that was what I was doing!) and slow breathing.
I also tried to embrace each contraction as another step closer to meeting my baby and thinking "yes" and accepting the contraction rather than fighting it and trying to keep it away (kind of hard to explain)..it all worked perfectly after about 10 hours he was born naturally no drugs (a bit of gas towards the end), even though he was posterior and the pushing took about 2 hours
RE: fear in birthing, I used each contraction as a reminder my body was doing what it was supposed to and tried to remain "open" and relaxed to let nature do it;s thing...as well as listening to and breathing along with the rythym of a Jeff Buckley CD so intensely that I yelled if DH forget to press play when it ended non stop for about 6 hours!!!
best of luck, hope it all goes well for you
Dear waterlily,l
thanks for sharing your story. I love hearing positive birth stories.

Hi it's me again,
More questions. I am having trouble finging a hypnobirthing/calmbirth course in the Newcastle area. I have emailed Susan Dalby and two calmbirth instructors in the area and all the emails were returned - I double checked email address and didn't make a mistake.
Can anyone help with details of practitioners in Newcastle?
Also Susan Dalby (psychologist) uses the (R) sign after her info on hypnobirthing so does this mean she is qualified in hypnobirthing. I haven't seen her name mentioned on any other australian hypnobirthing sites.
Thank,
Michelle
Hi Michelle
Im not in Newcastle :)
but the BirthSkills program has distance education packages
x
thanks blue daisy,
I will check it out!
Mich
I would love to try hypnobirthing for the birth of my third child and I was just wondering if there are any good books or websites that can be recommended?
Thanks :D
if you click on my signature link it will take you through to my web page, and I have info about HypnoBirthing
:)
Natalie - have you heard anything about the hypnobirthing class that is run in beachmere in Queensland? Just want to make sure its legit before I sign up for it!!!! :D Just after your expert opinion of course!!!
:D
thanks
no I have not
i would be very cautious of any course that advocates you will feel no pain in labor, as this is something only attainable by a very small percentage of the population
your on a winner if the practitioner is also a childbirth educator and had experienced birth (personally or professionally)
x
I just went to Borders and bought the book HypnoBirthing, The Mongan Method
I might start reading it tonight.:)
Natalie - on their website it just says using it to eliminate fear of pain in labour, eliminates fatigue during labour, reduces the need for painkillers during labour. It says she is from the childbirth education centre?
It seems to be pretty legit.. it says she is a certified practitioner for teaching the mongan method?
