    Exclamation How do you know...

the difference between Braxton Hicks and the real thing?

I know that BH's aren't meant to be regular but I'm getting regular period like pain, every 2-3 mins at the moment and I'm only 34ish weeks along. Is this something I should be worrying about? Bubs is already engaged and I've been nesting a lot lately... I haven't had a show or broken waters but should BH's be regular like this? They have been regular for over half an hour and haven't stopped when I walked around or changed position.

My midwives told me with DD that if i had more than 4 bh ctx in an hour i should call them. Maybe you should call in and check with them? My BH NEVER hurt until the night before i went into labour and i think they weremore prelabour than BH if you know what i mean. Make sure you're well-hydrated, dehydration can cause crampy contractions, as can UTI's.

Try having a shower and taking some panadol. If that doesn't work, maybe ring the hospital.

Does sound like more than BH. Keep us updated on how things progress.

Some BH can be painful - my DW has had some quite painful ones. It can be hard to tell the difference.

I was reading on wikipedia the other day that women can be "distracted" from BH by exercising. Perhaps you could try a quick jog around the block and see how things go?

(Disclaimer: the above was meant as a joke. As the partner of a 39 and a half week pregnant woman, I in no way endorse jogging as a way of differentiating between BH and contractions.)

Thanks michael, I'm trying to distract myself but still feeling the crampy things. DH is trying to be positive and saying 'you aren't going into labour'. I appreciate the thought but it isn't his stomach that is cramping every two mins!

well shower, water and panadol have been had, haven't really noticed a chance, might call my middy just to be sure...

After leaning on the back of the couch for about 20 mins the pains started subsiding. I went to bed and was a bit crampy but nothing like the cramps every 2 mins! I got a good nights sleep and feel very energetic again this morning.

Middy checked me out today, was excited that we were getting BH's and has told me to hold off the evening primrose oil and raspberry leaf tea which I was going to start today. She thinks this bubs is pretty keen to come out and she is in a great position for labour so I'm really happy that I have been doing my exercises and not sitting on the couch.

Thanks everyone for checking up - hopefully another 3 weeks and it will be the real thing!

Sometimes BHs will stop when you rest also. So if you lie down for a while and they go away it's a good sign it's just BHs. I had heaps of painful, often regular BHs with pg2 and was really worried about telling the difference. But when the time came I did know. I think it came down to instinct mostly, although I think there was something a bit more intense about the real thing. BTW the real thing wasn't regular for me with DS2 and my labour was too quick for them to get closer together!

Glad to hear all is good!

I had quite regular BH with both boys, sometimes for an hour or two at a time, but not painful. With DS1 they ran into pre-labour and then the real thing...will be watching these ones closely they have picked up a bit in the last week or so but nothing major yet.

That's fantastic that bub is in a good posi...and not bad news either that she's 'keen' lol ...just another couple of weeks
