    Large blood clot *TMI*

    Hi all.

Just a question- I am 7 days post giving birth. My bleeding started to slow a couple of days ago and has been very dark brown. I have been using 1-2 pads a day so I thought it was almost gone. About an hour ago I started having period pain. I went to the toilet and passed a large bright red clot- about the size of my palm...Now I have started bleeding again- not large amounts but bright red blood.

I am not overly concerned so I'm just wondering if i should be IYGWIM? Is this normal to pass such a large clot 1 week after birth?

Maybe I should ring my midwife...?

    TIA

ETA: I am otherwise healthy- feeling well, no symptoms of anything

I had this with DD, and figured it was just some more uterus clearling out etc. I ended up with postpartum bleeding for nearly 2 weeks with clots etc ranging in sizes all through that time.

I read somewhere if you are bleeding heavily at this point and passing larger than golf ball size clots AND have a temp over 38 then to go to the ER immediately

It wouldn't hurt to ring and check to be on the safe side though

I didn't have anything like that with DS, but I did with DD. I got a little worried at first, but apparently it's quite normal. I was told it's more common to have a large clot after you have been sitting for a prolonged time. Rather than the blood slowly seeping out, it pools together and clots until you stand or push on the toilet.

I would also go a few days without blood-loss, and then have some bright red blood, but was told that that is also normal and it can just be like a "scab" tearing open a little :/ Weird.

    Hmmm, Ok.

I was sitting here thinking- gee I hope I'm not going to bleed to death or something, which is why I thought I would ask. I spose I will just keep monitoring it.

My DH is such a gem- I said to him "Incase I bleed out and pass out make sure you give DD her medicine at 6 o'clock..." he replied..."What would we have for tea then...if you pass out...."... Best ask the important question DH...LOL

With DD I passed a clot the size of a softball O.o. They pulled it apart and it was all fine...

I'd ring and let her know whats going on hun. Hope its nothing major just clearing out. I had a few large-ish clots and bleeding that would change color from brown to red for about 18 days with DD but all good. it can be scarey though

I passed a huge one about a week and a half after dd1's birth, freaked me out and was quite painful when it passed through my cervix but when I called the midwife she siad it was quite normal and not to worry unless I had heavy bleeding. It doesnt hurt to ring you midwife and check in with them about what is happening

I passed a big clot about the size you described 5 days after DS2 was born so I called the hospital. They told me to come in and get it checked, which I did, but it turned out to be nothing to worry about and I wasnt bleeding to death, lol. I was worried though for a minute there.

I passed a large one at about 10 days PP and I had a largish bleed afterwards too. I called the hospital mainly because I was still concerned about having a PPH, but they said it was fine and not uncommon at all. If you are feeling fine and the bleeding settles I wouldn't worry about it, but if you start feeling off and the bleeding doesn't stop then I'd call.

Same deal here, I was still in hospital and about 5 days after birth I passed a clot the size of a golfball, scared me a bit so I called the midwife and showed her, I think she pulled it apart to make sure it was just blood, she said it was very normal too

Same, same...although mine was one day after DS was born. It was a huge clot like a bladder of a softball or something and i was afraid my insides were falling out!! The midwives took it away (lucky them) and disected it to make sure it was just blood (think they were worried there might be parts of the placenta in it still) but all was good. I'd just monitor it and call your OB if itgets heavier.

Just make sure you keep up your iron during this time, a low iron level is the last thing a new mum needs. Hope things are better today hun
