I've been thinking about my birth plan.
I've never really been this educated on birth before & there are alot of things I would like to change, I'm just hoping for your help remembering them!
Firstly, I would like to delay cord clamping.
I would like an active birth. I was strapped to monitors with DS & couldn't move. I don't think being such a small hospital that wireless monitors would be available, so what other options are there? DS was distressed, I had mecconium in my waters & thats why he was monitored, but does it need to be continuous monitoring if it was to happen again??
I haven't thought much about my placenta yet. All my friends have theirs in the backs of their freezers, I never thought about keeping it before & I'm not real sure about keeping it now. I like the idea, but just haven't thought about it yet.
I've never had a problem with getting skin to skin or breastfeeding when baby is ready before, so I shouldn't this time.
What else is there I should consider? I'm thinking of limiting internal examination to just one on arrival for my own knowledge, but I'm not sure. Curiosity makes me want at least one, but I worry I'll ask for another one. I'd rather rely on my body though iykwim.
I haven't birthed in this hospital before, but have 100% support from my gp/ob. I'm sure that he'll support my wishes, but there's not a huge chance he'll even be there for the birth.
Its pretty relaxed here. I don't book into the hospital til about 30 weeks. Small area near Coffs, most people go up to Coffs. I did with my first 2, but 1 hour vs 15 minutes. I want to be close to home this time.
So, how do I do this? I've always just gone into labour thinking 'as natural as possible' & always had great mw's who tried their best to help me with that. Until I scream at them that I can't do gas, & that I need pethidine... 10 minutes before birth, lol!
Any help, suggestions you guys could offer would be great
Oh & vit k & hep B will be done, so not worried about anything there
Well, what didn't you like about your other births? That was a good starting point for me. Being a 4th bub, they may (depending on hospital policy on this) want to put a cannula in as a precaution if you start to bleed out. 4th time mums are considered to be higher risk of PPH and some hospitals require that you have a cannula in JIC this happens. If this is what their policy is, request that the cannula be put further up your arm, because it can be a PITA to have it in your hand or wrist as you have limited movement and if you have a long labour it can be in there for hours and it gets really sore.
Thankyou for letting me know. I'll write that on my list of questions to ask my gp.
I had a bleed after DD2, but they just kept a close eye on me with DS.
ETA - I'm considering letting DD1 be there. I haven't discussed it with DH yet & I'm really not sure about it, but I like the idea. How do hospitals feel about this?
re birth plan & the gas not working 10 minutes before birth, sounds like my last one, they need to up the gas!! I didn't realise how good that stuff was until they were stitching me up, that's number one request for my impending birth.
You also mentioned internals, I had 2 with DS, much to my disgust, the first one was copletley un necessary, as I was only 1 cm, but they wanted me there because membranes had ruptured at 5am, by 11 am no real contractions had started, I was pos strep & one week late so was also induced.
This internal was increadibly painfull, and i found myself shuffelling up the bed away from the registrar.
second one was fine, and was just confirmation that the way I was acting was indicative that there was a baby about to come out and that they couldn't wait another 2 hours & assess me for pethadine at that time!!
re kids in hospitals, mine prefers an additional support person for children to be present pending the age of the child, so it may depend on the age.
