My post partum bleeding was a lot like that. It was heavy and constant (clotty, etc) for the first week then it eased up and came and went until about 6 weeks. I didn't bleed again until AF returned when DD was around 11 months old.

My close friends have all said their bleeding after birth was much like you're describing too so maybe it is just that.
