severe backache but few contractions help

just on the off chance that anyone can help...

i am 37 weeks in two days. for the last 12 hours i have had severe backache radiating around to one side a little. i havent been able to hardly sleep and have taken panadol, baths etc. i am exhausted and feel very upset, and nauseous. i have only had what feel like a few contractions - ie pain that has "peaked" and then gone away, most of the time it has just been this back ache.

i am going in to see my midwife in a couple of hours when she gets in at 9am...

from reading on the web over night while ive been on all fours rocking (and wimpering!) i guess my baby is prob in the posterior position and this is prob causing the pain

i guess my question is - am i in labour? ie, do babies in posterior positions cause severe backache even when you are not in labour?

and if im not in labour, does this mean this backache will last the next two - three weeks until i give birth?

    any help appreciated

I'm sorry, I don't know!! But I wanted to wish you all the very best for this morning - hopefully your midwife can help you get more comfortable.
If your bub is posterior, you are doing the right thing with the positioning, I believe. I was told to kneel and lean forward against something, keeping your legs comfortably apart, so keeping your pelvis open.
When in labour I found straddling a chair and leaning forward against the backrest comfy for me.

Ooh - I don't know - how did you go with your midwife? I'm hoping that things have been happening & we'll hear some good news soon!

sounds very familiar to my labour... and the few weeks leading up to the birth... and yep my bub was posterior.. if you are still out there?!? do some reading on optimal fetal positioning and keep rocking and stretching as much as possible. try some heat packs as well as the panandol... if you are not in labour and you need to catch up on some rest ask ur midwife about some thing to help you rest.. the last thing you want is to be like this and then have to push when you are utterly exhausted...
i'm hoping everything is ok... please post again and tell us how you are...

thanks very much for your support
after nearly 24 hours of severe pain, i am much better now and in no pain at all...
turns out it wasnt labour but instead baby pressing on my left kidney causing swelling.
luckily some good drs were looking out for things other than labour, just co-incidentally happening at the same time that labour could have happened.
so now im hoping labour will progress normally in a week or so!
    thanks again
