I wouldn't recommend checking your cervix, you could introduce bugs if you are not immaculate with your hand hygine, damage membranes.
I can't help you with the bits coming out, maybe your mucous plug?
Alright so I am quite the cuious person and decided to see if I could check my own cervix.
It felt very high and the lips were mushy and soft. It was probably rtruding out like 1 cm.
The center felt like maybe a fingertip open, but around that part I felt weird like bump type things. It is hard to explain. It just felt like peices of something were coming out of it. Not a lot just a few, but I am very curious.
Does any one know what this description of my cervix might mean?
Any effacement, or dilation?
BY THE WAY:
At 33 weeks I had an internal and was told I was 1 cm and 50% effaced.
At 35 weeks My Dr. did another internal and I went back to square one. No effacement or dilation.

Dont check it again hun. The OB told me that each internal that happens can introduce bacteria (no matter how clean and careful you are being) and it can also loosen things around down there and your baby is still not fully cooked so needs to stay put a bit longer.
I agree with everyone else I personally wouldn't be checking it... There is no need to do an internal unless for medical reasons because of the reasons above.
Hi Jessica
I always find it strange that some OBs, especially in the US, want to do an internal at 35 weeks or even earlier, it really does not give any useful information. I also agree with the other girls, there is a chance of introducing bugs when doing an internal. However to answer your question.
From your description I would say that you are 50% effaced and about 1cm dilated. At 35 weeks this is not significant also it is only an estimation based on the average woman and your description of what you felt. At this stage in your pregnancy I would expect your cervix to feel soft and a little mushy however I am not sure what the bumps are, perhaps just some skin folds.
