Question 10pound baby? is it possible?

This may be a silly question but ah well, i'll ask anyway because i want to know.

My friend told me that her little boy was a 10-pound baby at birth! she delivered him via c/section. Is it possible to actually deliver a 10-pound baby via vaginal birth? just wondering. I know our bodies would be designed for that, however surely sometimes its just not possible? ie small pelvis etc?

I can imagine that would be a very looong labour? or not necessarily? I'm just curious that's all....

    Thank you for reading.

    that's great! thanks girls...

My gyno once told me when i was about 20! that one day if i have a big baby, that i should be okay to handle it as i have a "nicely shaped" uterus for it!!!?!?! whatever that means hehe but it always stuck in my mind! so i thought i'd ask about *big* babies incase i have one!
now i can rest.... hehe having a vaginal birth means alot to me that is all...

Its so sad that there is this "big babies can't be birthed" mentality in society. I really do believe its not about the size of your baby, but the effectiveness of the birth. So if you aren't working with your birth, or working to achieve the most out of your birth of course it may not be as easy for someone who knows all about positions and effective birthing techniques. I was told by a previous ob that there was no way I would achieve a vbac, that after having a 9lb baby (Paris) it was certain that my pelvis was too small. So I changed obs, my second ob told me the size of the baby doesn't matter for he has seen a woman struggle with a 5 lb baby and a woman push out a 10lber with ease. We need to stop focusing on the size of the baby and focus on the way we birth our babies.

I have to have another scan (number 5) at 32 weeks for a sizing cause they think this little princess will around the 10lb mark as well

Oh i hope not a nice little 8lber would be nice

that's a good point Cailin. yes if someone said to me, you can't birth this baby its just too big, then i would say to them "but what if it was hundreds of yrs ago and we werent in a hospital? what would we do then?" anything is possible hey.

I refused all sizing scans - they are woefully innaccurate and TBH I think you are better off not knowing. If I had have known how big Abby was going to be it might have put me off during the birth.

so you can refuse them? i didnt know that. im glad i know. i think it would put me off too!

so if i am getting a scan done closer to the delivery date, and someone says to me "this baby is going to be huge, perhaps a c/s will be good for you" then should i NOT listen to them?

I would take it with a BIG grain of salt, it is pretty rare that a baby is actually too big. More often then not they become malpositioned in the pelvis which makes it hard for them to get out and the mothers are told that they can't have a natural birth because their pelvis is too small. Check out the spinning babies website for a much better explanation than that!!

I reckon its the size of the head that counts.. not the weight of the baby! heheh. You could still have a 6lb baby with a 38cm head!
