With my 2nd, I woke up at about 2am 2 days before EDD with really strong waves of pain. In my bleary state I thought it might be labour, but then realised that it was different from what I remembered and these pains were at the top of my belly.
I spent the next 3.5 hours sitting on the toilet 'evacuating', to put it nicely, and then lay down on the sofa to rest. Thinking that it would be just my luck to go into labour with no sleep, I felt my first real contraction at about 5.30am. DS was birthed at 8.49am!
Stimulating your bowels is often a suggestion to self-induce labour and it's also one of the ways your body can prepare itself for the coming event. In my case, who knows whether it was body getting ready, or a bout of gastro which in turn stimulated the contractions - chicken and egg!
