I had a VB with no complications 10wks ago. Just wondering when I can run again. The physio did tell me when I was in hosp but I can't remember. I've asked a few friends and they've all been told different things. I'm really keen to get into some serious exercise..... summer will be here before we know it!
Pls let me know what you've been told or what you did yourself.
Your OB should have given you the go-ahead at the 6 week check. Provided your pelvic floor is ok (the physio can check this) you should be ok to go. I was running 8 weeks after having a c/s.
I thought I would have been ok at the 6 week mark too but I know the physio said it was longer than that because all the ligaments are still softened due to the relaxin in pg and it takes longer for things to go back to as they were. I'm keen to get started now so I hope its ok.
Can you start with a brisk walk (don't you love the word brisk? I don't think I use it apart from describing walks!), see how that goes, then combine part walk and part jog...you know, build it up. Listen to your body, being really gentle?
Do your pelvic floor exercises, if you haven't had any stitches checked then perhaps do that, or at least talk to your dr or MCHN just to double check what precautions you should be taking.
It's definitely not a good idea to rush straight back into full on exercise, so I'd be just working yourself up to running gradually.
I'm still working myself up to running...I'm at the getting out of bed before noon stage (don't want to push myself too hard you know. :P). Just take it easy to start with.
I jogged a few weeks after Caty was born (not sure how many though - sorry!). Like others have said, if your pelvic floor is back on track (ie: good sex and no leaking!) then jogging shouldn't be an issue (in my experience). I remember during the first few jogs I had to race home cos it felt like my bowels were about to be dropped! Not good! But no disasters...just a very strange feeling! Wierd that it was my bowels and not wees but anyway!
I found the literature given to me by the physio in hosp. It says that you shouldn't run for 3 months after giving birth as apparently this is how long it takes for the ligaments to tighten back up (as everything gets loose during pg in prep for birth).
Thanks for all your responses. I got my treadmill yesterday so I'm going to start easing into my exercise routine. DS is nearly 3 months old now so by the time fit enough to run again my ligaments should be ready
