Birth story for sebastian --- failed vbac

Alrighty so its taken me awhile to write this up... just havent been able to sit down and think about it without getting to upset.

So it all started saturday the 2nd of january, woke up and was pretty sure i was in the earlly stages of pre labour, was getting contractions every 1/2hr or so and feeling really uncomfortable. These kept going consistantly all through the day i could still move about and do general day to day things without to much fuss.

Sunday --- was pretty much the same they moved a bit closer together to about 10-15mins apart until about 8:30pm where they got to 7-8mins between contractions went to bed earlly to try and get some sleep, this didnt work so i just rocked through the contractions in bed hoping to grab little bits of sleep here and there. I wasnt to worried about going to the hossy as i was due for ctg monitoring at 1030 monday as i was 40+5 days.

Monday --- Contractions still consistant at 8mins apart head to the hossy for our appointment and get hooked up to the monitors. After about 15mins i was sent down to the labour ward as they wernt getting a good base heart reading for bubs and they were worried and also the fact that i was trying for a vbac and my previous ceaser was due to fetal distress amongst other things. Get hooked up to the monitors down in the labour ward and find dealing with contractions horrible on my back especially considering i was having a back labour as well due to a posterier baby! Ouchy! There were still having trouble getting a good base reading so i was stuck on my back hooked up to the monitors for 4hrs! After which they finally decided on a course of action. They were going to book me in for a ceaser the next day if i wasnt dilated enough for my waters to be broken, so a lovely internal later it was found i was already 2-3cm dilated (he also did a stretch and sweep to move things along) was told to come back the next day at 8am to have waters broken and see where we go from there. So left hossy and the stetch and sweep turned things up a bit and contractions went to 5mins apart.
Contractions were getting longer and more painful as the day went on, and by the time 9pm came along i was in and out of the shower trying to get through them, used the tens machine but that was horrible and just made it worse, stood up and rocked though them tryed everything i could to get more comfy. By 11pm they were getting really strong and painful so gave the hossy a ring and the midwife there was like well you can talk on the phone so they cant be that bad, your not really in established labour call back in an hour! pffffft to her!!! So i sucked it up for another hour and rang back and said im coming in NOW! Get there a bit after midnight, she hooks me up to the monitors again ARGHH back labour and lying on back = very PAINFUL! After some pleading she hooks up the portable monitor so i can at least move around. Apparently again something not right about bubs heart rate so i was made to stay the night. Midwife gives me sleeping tablets to try and get some sleep, they dont work and i end up spending the next couple of hours drifing in and out of sleep in the shower.

Tuesday --- Contractions still painful and are now down to 3mins apart and lasting a good 90seconds. Nicer midwife thank goodness comes in and evaluates and disucusses pain relief, she offers gas but i dont want it just yet, doctors comes in bout 7am and everyone sets up to have waters broken. This is done (grossest feeling yuk!) and an internal monitor is hooked up to bubs head which is portable thankgoodness!. Also sitting at 4cm dilated after all that time So keep labouring for the next few hours, contractions are all in my back still and the pain is becoming really intense, i ask for the gas and jump in the shower. Gas took the edge off for a bit. 12pm comes around and another internal we are sitting at 6cms now and this is where the fun begins! Not long after the contractions stepped up a notch and were pretty much one of top of the other, i feel the need to push but know i cant as im nowhere near dilated enough. So dealing with the contractions, back labour and trying not to push for the next hour becomes to much im sucking back so much gas im nearlly passing out and its no longer helping. I ask for an epi and OMG that was the longest wait of my life! He nearlly refused to do it as he thought i was having a baby there and then midwives had to explain that wasnt the case just really bad positioning of the baby. Keeping still and dealing with the contractions with no break in between while he was inserting it was horrible. Once its in and working its the best feeling ever! All the pain went away and i could finally rest! Forgot to mention it was a very hot day and i was getting dehydrated as well which was having an effect on bubs so was hooked me up to an iv for fluids as well.

Manage to get about an hours sleep which was good as i was absolutely exhusted! Had constant monitoring the whole time a midwife was always present in my room. Had another internal at about 4pm and was 7cm dilated baby was happy. By about 5pm epi was starting to wear off so they topped me up. Had 2 doctors come and and did another internal and was 8cm baby had turned head down but looking sideways and hadnt dropped any further down. They explained to me that at 6:30pm we would re evaluate what was going to happen. Between 5pm and 6:30pm midwife leaves and comes back with another doctor they talk amongst themselves and are looking at the ctg monitor i know somethings up! I ask mum to look and babys heart rate had dropped down to 78bpm. My heart sinks as i know whats coming next..... Next minute the 2 doctors looking after me coming and say we need to get you into theater now....if you are dilated enough for forcepts we will use them other wise its a ceaser we need to get the baby out now.

So the room fills up with heaps of people, forms to sign and off we go to theater...once in there another internal is done and still no progress.....so a ceaser it is... Im given 2 more lots of top ups for the epi just to make sure its strong enough so i dont feel anything (last time round spinal wore off while being stitched up) They put the curtain up and away they go.
Our beautiful baby boy was born at 7:11pm on tuesday the 5th weighing in at 8 pound 11. 36cm head and 53cm long. He was perfect and scored 9 on his apgars. Lost a bit of blood but not enough for a transfusion.

Was wheeled into recovery where blood pressure was all over the place, epi was already starting to wear off. Fed bubs while there and he was a natual at it, he spent the next hr and a half feeding.

Well if you got this far...thanks for reading was quiet a long labour.

    WOW!!
You did an awesome job! Seriously I would not have been able to last as long as you did! You have some serious willpower there....

It may be a failed vbac, but maybe he wanted to be like his big sister!
