I still have the smile on my face from the day she was born I am still in awe of how wonderful everything and everyone was, I think because I have had such horrible experiances with Peiter and grace I was not feeling to hopefull for anything wonderful, I knew it would be better because I knew my OB and I was in a lovely private hospital etc, but it all exceeded my expectation.
okay so on tuesday the 24th of July ( my actual due date ) I had an appointment with my OB to check on how I was going so that he could asses waht he would need to do for my booked induction on the 26th, He checked my cervix and said I was 1 and a half cm dialated and 1 and a half cm thick and would probably be best to come in on wednesday the 25th at 8 pm to have forst lot of Gels.
So Wednesday the 25th comes and it was a busy day running here and running there getting the kids sorted as they were staying with Jeffs parents untill I got out of hospital, night time comes and its time to get moving, so we kiss the kids goodbye wich was a bit emotianal for me as I have never really left them before the only time they have ever stayed out is over night at my mums and even then I go and get them at 8am the next morning,
so Jeff and I head to the hospital picking up some barnicle bills on the way ( fish and chips ) something the midwifes thougt was rather funny, we arrive at the hospital at 8pm and are shown our lovely room with a double bed as requested we unpacked and ate quickly and then were taken to the labour room and monitored for an hour and had the first dose of Gels, that was at about 9pm so at around 10 pm the midwifes said to go take a shower and head to bed, and thats what we did.
nothing much happened onver night except for when I got up to go to the loo, as when I moved or walked the contractions srtarted but went away when I laid down,
the midwife came in at about 6:30 am to let me know they were running a little behind and that I should have a shower eat my breaky and then buzz them to head up to the labour room,
so at about 8 am we went to the labour room, where Jan my midwife began monitoring me and she also put the second lot of gells in, she monitored me for another 30 min and then told me to walk the hall ways to try and get things movong along so I started that at about 8:45 am,
the walking made labour start hard and fast, I began having contractions pretty much straight away and they bacame regular and stronger by 10 am they were coming every 2 minutes and lasting for 40 seconds, so the said I was in established labour at 10 am, Jan monitored me again and checked me then sent me off walking again, she then tracked us down and said Neil our OB needed us in labour room asap, so we went straight there and he checked my cervix and said I was about 2 cm dilated and that he was going to break my waters, so at 11 am Neil broke my waters, and when he did he said that my waters were moconium stained and that this could be a sign of distress and that I would have to stay on the monitors for the rest of my labour,
Jan said that they had just purchased a new wireless monitor and that I could use that if I wanted to, which I did, so she went and got it and put it on me so that I could move around a little, after getting out of bed we realised it was not doing a great job while I walked around so Jan got the gym ball so I could sit on that and that seemed to be fine so I sat there for quite a while as it did seem to help with the pain of each contraction, at around 1pm Jan asked me to get back on the bed so she could check that the monitor was doing the right thing and also check how I was going, by this time the contractions were getting very strong and very painfull Jan did some monitoring and gave me some gas which made me oh so sick I ended up vomiting, she checked my cervix and said I was about 6 cm dilated and that was at about 1:50pm at that stage I felt I could not take anymore as in my mind, if I was only 6cm and was already in this much pain and that it was going to take hours longer to deliver my baby and the pain was going to probaby almost double in intensity I started to feel I couldnt do it anymore and asked for an epidural, in the mean time Jan gave me a small dose of Fentenol wich made me so drousy and out of it but didnt help with the pain at all, I am so glad she only gave me a quater dose as it wore off in about 20 min as I hated feeling like I was on another planet.
at 2:25pm the anethetist came in he had a chat to me and started to get ready, and then my Dr, Neil also came in to see how I was going, at 2:35 the anethetist had put the epi in and he said he would only give me a very small dose to start and then they would up it untill I felt comfortable, he also said it would take 10 to 15 minutes to take effect.
Neil asked me to get on my back so he could check me and when he did he just ran out of the room Jeff and I just looked at eachother,Rhonda my other midwife asked him what he was doing and he just said ' well i have to get ready fast cause this baby is coming' Rhonda said to me 'well it looks like its time to start pushing', Jan asked me if I felt any need to push, I said I didnt but I felt massive pressure and it hurt ALOT the contractions were getting even more intense and were lasting alot longer,
Neil came back in and he was wearing this bright blue apron with funny cows and pigs and chickens on it, Jeff said to him 'love ya apron' and he just said 'well I have to keep my self clean' with a chuckle I remember thinking it was funny but I just couldnt laugh,
so I started pushing at 2:40 pm and with about 10 good pushes and some controlled pushing and panting I felt the head come out and then Neil said to Jeff quick get a photo Jeff just looked at him and then took a pic Neil said she just came out after that that he couldnt beleive how fast she just flew out LOL, so at 2:55pm our baby was born, Neil then passed me my baby, and asked me 'what do we have' I looked and said 'its a girl' I was so happy and that moment was most deffiantely one of my highlights, I cuddled her for a while and tried breast feeding then Rhonda took me for a shower, it was funny cause all the epi had done was make my left leg feel a little heavy like I had been sitting on it for a long time, then I remembered the Anethetist saying to Jeff 'its funny you know as soon as you put the epi in they think its working but its not its all mind over matter with some people' I then had a think about it and I think that perhaps they did the epi to help me to get back the controll I had lost as by the time the anethetist came in I was literally climbing the bed and scratching and biting Jeff ( that part makes me giggle though ) I wanted it to stop I in my mind couldnt take anymore,
I am so glad that I had the labour and birth the way it was, I am so happy that I went for so long without and epi this time and I feel I have now prooven to myself I can do it without one next time, its funny you know as my mum has always told me about how she dilated so fast with all of her children and she felt I would be the same but by having the epi I would never know, and this time it was exactly how she had explained it to be she would get to about 5 or 6 cm and then with in 30 min go to 10cm and that is exactly what happened to me, so next time I wont be having an epi I will just know that when it gets to that intensity it is time to deliver.
I am in absolute awe of my dr he was amazing, I suprised him too by the fact that I was actually ready to push when he was not expecting that at all, he said to me after, that he had only come in to see how I was going and to check my cervix, he was still in his suit and didnt have time to change, he also had patients wating in his waiting room down stairs for thier appointments as he truly felt I would not deliver until atleast 6 or 7 pm that night,
its amazing to me as right now I feel in a way excited and I cant wait to do it again as it was such a wonderful and posative experiance, for my last 2 deliveries it was awful and I dont have much good to say about either of them but this one I can not fault in any way at all, the staff were wonderful and my Ob was fantastic I walked away with no bruising no tearing or even a graze and that to me is pretty wonderful.
we stayed in the hospital untill Sunday and that was great too, I said to Jeff 'I am just waitng for the nasty midwife to come in' but she never showed up as they were all so lovely and supportive and 100% there for me in any way I needed and that felt so nice and reasuring. I also loved that Jeff was able to stay with me the whole time, he never left my side and that was lovely.
Thankyou for reading if you got through all that LOL
