My natural induced birth of my beautiful little boy!!!
Just thought I'd share my story of the birth of my gorgeous little man!
I saw my OB for my 38+6 weeks checkup on Wednesday 29 Sept 2010 and my OB was concerned as I had very high blood pressure along with hot flushes, very swollen feet, legs and hands and it was recommended that I was induced the next morning. I was already 3-4cm dilated and my cervix 90% effaced. My OB booked me into hossy for the next morning Thursday 30 Sept 2010.
I got to the hossy at 7:15am on the Thursday morning and introduced to my midwife who would be with me during the birth. She took us to the birthing suite, where I got changed and had the canula put in my hand (not once, not twice, not even three times, but 4 times before they (the midwife and another lady both struggled and said it was because of all my fluid but got it in after the 4th try and it was all good). Ouch, my hands and arm looked like that of a druggies! lol
My OB came in at 7:45am and broke my waters at 8:05am. I had LOADS of fluid and it was the weirdest feeling ever when my waters went POP and I felt the gush of water ALL OVER THE BED! lol They started to induce me with the Oxytocin/Syntocinon at about 8:45am and my contractions started around 9:30am, which wasn't too bad at first. The contractions really started to kick in a bit stronger by about 10:30am (when I was checked by the midwife and was told I was 6-7cm dilated). The midwife was really impressed that I could handle the strong contractions without any pain relief and I told her that although the contractions were strong, that they felt like normal period cramps to me (I have endometriosis and my OB who did my surgery for me back in 2007 said that women with severe period pains caused by endometriosis can feel similar to that of labour pains) and to me, he was right as my labour pains and period pains felt almost exactly the same!
At 12:00pm I finally decided to use the gas and suck on it as the pains were becoming a bit unbearable. Still I pushed through and kept going. The midwife asked whether I wanted to have a shot of pethidine and I said that I didn't want to have any drugs. At about 12:45pm I felt a huge urge to push and the midwife said that she didn't think it was time yet, but she checked me again and said that I was about 9 and 1/2 cm dilated. I said that I needed to push and she said that she thought I had a bit longer to go. She said that I could try to show her how I wanted to push and so I did. She was surprised that it appeared to be time to push and said that she'd get my OB there straight away.
My OB showed up just after 1:00pm and I pushed (I wasn't able to use the gas anymore while pushing) and it was intensely painful, but I kept going without any drugs. I pushed for 2 hours and 15 minutes and was becoming exhausted and felt like I couldn't go on anymore. Bubs heart rate started to drop and he became a bit distressed so the OB got me ready for theatre as he was going to give me a spinal block and try to vacuum bubs out and if it didn't work then it would become an emergency c-section.
They wheeled me down to theatre at 3:10pm, gave me the spinal block at about 3:20pm, I gave three big pushes along with the contractions and vacuum and bubs was out.
Bubs didn't breathe straight away (which was terrifying), but they gave him oxygen and he was fine after about 2 mins. He got an apgar score of 7 at first and then later a 10.
Once he started to breathe, they put him on my chest and it was just the most amazing feeling seeing my little boy. DH had tears in his eyes too and is sooooo proud!!
Official stats: Baby Noah born on 30/09/2010 (@ 39 weeks) @ 15:30pm, 4.03kg (8pds, 13oz), 54cm, HC36.5cm, after a 7 hour 25 mins drug free labour, with a 2nd degree tear and 5 stitches.
I am sooooooooo in love with my little boy, it is hard to describe how much love I have in my heart for him. When I look at him, my heart overflows with happiness, love and joy. I find myself constantly just sitting there watching him as he sleeps. lol.
Pretz I have been watching and waiting for this story! I have tears in my eyes now that you are at the end of your pregnancy journey, which I know hasn't always been easy, and have started the journey of motherhood. Your little man looks absolutely gorgeous. Fingers crossed he is a good little boy. The vaccuum is pretty nasty huh? But well done on your drug free birth and good luck enjoying your little fella in the weeks/months/years ahead!
