Tillie and Hamish welcome a little girl in a turbo labor on 26/02/13

I was having irregular contractions for two hrs that were very tolerable and had lost 2 fifty cent sized shows. Think i will be in proper labor soon! My midwife (who had been the support midwife of the birth of DD1 13 yrs before!) advised me to go to bed and try to sleep as we won't know how long this pre stage could go for. Of course when i jumped into bed at 23:15 things started to progress and i couldn't be lying down when a contraction came on i realised that it was on like Donkey Kong! My contractions amped up from 10-15 mins apart rolling happily on the fit ball and mild to 5-7 mins and having to lean onto the couch on my knees in the space of 45 mins! Time to pack the car and head off to the hospital which is an hrs drive away! We rang ahead and let the midwife know we were heading her way at 12:30 AM. What a long drive! One contraction lasted for almost 2 mins which was soo hard being in an upright sitting position of a car with DD1-13 yrs, DD2-10.10 yrs and DS-25 mths in the back! When we arrive at the Mercy Family Birth Centre at 01:30AM, my midwife meets us at the door and says "you're too happy to be in labor!" Everyone in! We have DH, DD1 rubbing my lower back, DD2 holding the torch for the midwife (we have lights off, lamp on) DS in the pram with trusty "Dow" (Teddy Val, given to him at birth by my Grandma Val hence the name!) We have been unable to get through to my MIL, turns out the cat knocked the phone off the hook!)The next hour i had progressively more intense labor pain that were clustered together so much they felt like they were melting into one another. One would ebb off thankfully and another would start up with a vengeance giving me only enough time to go from all fours with my head down and bum up to lying Lt lateral on the floor for not even a minute before i had to get back onto all fours again.. What amazing sensations i felt of everything opening up and literally "clicking into gear" or opening up in my vagina! I really noticed this time! My waters started oozing out just a warm trickle and things kicked up another notch! In my head i think"is that possible?!" I can now feel a real fullness in my vagina that makes me feel like i need to open my legs right outwards to give bubs more room...I remember thinking breathe out, try not to push, let my body do the work. Anyway i do a mix of breathing and some little pushing. My midwife asks me to lean onto the bed rather than with my head down to help with gravity ( I had my head down to slow the delivery of the head and place as little amount of pressure on my perineum as i cld). Ok i'm ready to for the next part! Almost immediately i can feel bub head crowning with very little effort. I place my hand between my legs and can feel a wrinkly hairy patch, where has all this hair come from?! And damn! I thought more was out than that! I click over another notch!! I get a really, really big urge to bare down. Oh my God! Now that's a head!! Burning ring of fire! Midwife calling out "Don't push! Don't push!" Um...ok that's a big ask! I don't know if i can distinguish between pushing and panting or blowing out a candle! DH who is on the bed holding DS hand in one hand and my hands with the other brings me back into the room "Darling don't push, blow out the candle!"...It was a really, really BIG candle, the biggest you can imagine! Here come the head! That is the most pain i have felt this labor, i know we are almost there! Wow it is amazing what you can do with your body! Next contraction: here come the shoulders, that is almost as painful as the head! The next contraction i get some relief as the rest of babies body slides out. At 02:29 AM: Midwife calls out "Tillie come meet your baby!" Mind boggling! Full head of dark hair and looks like very dark eyes! That was unexpected! My others are honey with ice blue eyes, light brown ringlets with blue eyes and strawberry with grey/blue eyes! I put baby to breast Sit upright to help placenta come away. My midwife is fantastic, she feels my cord to see if it has stopped pulsating then offers my husband to cut the cord. I sit for a while longer move to the toilet and have a bit of a gush, my midwife says it is best if i have the syntocinon due to the blood loss, i agree. I don't want to lose my whole blood volume which apparently can happen in 15 mins of post birth bleeding. Thankfully my placenta slips away with no other intervention required ( last two births retained placenta, manual removal required for last one...)
Welcome to the fold little girl!! xo xo
