17 month old - how many bottles?

Hi there

How many bottles a day does/did your 17 month old drink?

DS still generally has one bottle in the morning and one before bed, but some days he wants another small bottle before one or both naps ...

How about you?

DD1 stopped bottles at 13months. She did have a cup of milk at night and every other morning. She would sometimes want a cup of milk during the day though so I just gave her a half cup. She was never a drink to sleep baby though so it was never associated with sleeping/napping.

My DD is 16 months and she still has one for her day nap and one at night when she goes to bed. Up until a few months ago she was still waking up at night and drinking a whole bottle before going back to sleep, but one night she just suddenly stopped and hasnt done it since.

My hubby is still in the habit of making her one in the morning, if he is home with the kids while I am at work I will sometimes come home to find he has made her one in the morning that she will drink if offered, and then another for her nap, and then another in the afternoon!!! But thats just coz he makes them out of habit, he hasnt realised she has dropped them (even though i am sure i told him ) and they are all half drunk not finished (and wasted!!)

She has always been a drink to sleep girl, but she CAN go to sleep without one and will actually now often throw the bottle to the side and prefer to just go to sleep. (she is good like that.. she did the same with her dummy at 10 months.. just refused it!- Sooooo different to DS who was BF- Feed to sleep boy til about 16 months until we weaned with alot of upset!!!)

I say my DD is slowly in her own time weaning herself, i am letting her do it at her own pace and I am not fussed if she has an extra bottle- or if she doesnt have one, as long as she is happy

DD 15months stopped bottles right on 12 months of age. We give her toddlers yogurt now to keep her dairy up.

DD 18 months usually has a BF in the morning (after breakfast), one in the early arvo (if she has a nap), sometimes a short one around 4, and almost always one after bath before bed.

So 3-4 each day.

If i am working and she sleeps in, or we are out alot it might only be 1 or 2.

DD2 is 26 months old and still has a bottle before naps during the day, one before bed and one if she wakes over night

I have an 18mth old and she has 50mls before lunch time sleep and 100mls before bed at night. Perhaps you could offer a sippy cup of milk instead of the extra bottle the little one wants???

My almost 2yr old still has several a day. Has always had one to sleep, so for arvo nap and before bed. Also if upset he will ask for one, he seems to want milk and not food atm. He also often wakes over night for a bottle (hasn't for 3 nights in a row YAY). I don't have a prob with the amount of milk he drinks but just that he is still having bottles at this age. I am going to get him a sippy cup that doesn't leak on the weekend and see if we can encourage that. My four year old still loves his milk, so with that and cereal every morning we are spending a tidy amount of money on milk

Since weaning off BF at around 13 months DD has had a cup of milk upon waking each morning and before bed each night. On particularly fussy eating days I sometimes give her half a cup during the day, and if she wakes overnight and won't resettle I sometimes find offering half a cup helps if she happens to be hungry. This happens rarely though - drinking it through the night.

DD was on two bottle most the time at that age (mid morning and before bed at night) but if she was unwell, unsettled or just demanding another then I'd give her another small bottle. We still do the same now actually and she turned 2 in September.

My theory is milk is so good for them and providing it's not interfering with their solids, then why shouldn't they have it? We as adults can have milk, juice, soft drink or a glass of wine when we want to simply because we are thirsty or we like the taste. Why deprive our kids from the one drink they love too? KWIM?

Not everyone will agree with my theory but that's how I feel about milk for my DD.

Can I suggest that you give milk in sippy cup and not a bottle, as they advice no bottles after 12 months due to the fact that the teat allows milk to pool behind teeth and cause decay, as generaly kids are having a bottle and falling asleep with it in their mouth.

3 serves of dairy as day is what they need so milk or yougurt or cheese.

My DS at that age wasn't having any bottles at all. We stopped pretty much on his first birthday.There is some evidence that using bottles and possibly formula beyond one year might be linked to weight issues later in life (and our children may be genetically predisposed that that). Also because of the dental issue as mentioned by Feebs.

He was drinking a sippy cup with about 200mL of milk with breakfast and with dinner.

He has his sippy cup during the day, but he prefers his milk warmed, and he drinks it during nappy changes or before bed snuggles.

We don't use formula, just cows milk now.

He never falls asleep with it, and we brush his teeth - so we're happy on that count

It's more the volume we're wondering about.

DS has never had a bottle, but since he stopped BFing at 13ish months, he has about 75mL of slightly warmed milk in a sippy cup with his breakfast and the same at night. In other words, not much at all. We have been really conscious of not associating the milk with sleep, so he's never fed to sleep except when he was very small. He's never been offered milk at night if he wakes either. And, as with Feeb, we don't offer a bottle for dental reasons and always make sure he cleans his teeth after milk/before bed at night.
