Ive been looking around today for some help my baby boy 6mo wont eat anything with vegies, not homemade or packaged
he gags on it and spits it out, he cant live on fruit for ever!
Also how and when do i start giving him solid food to eat, my health nurse wants to be give him cooked carrotts but im super freaked out about choking and cant bring myself to give him anything that he could possible choke on..
I wouldnt worry at 6 months - it is v early days with solids at all and he may like different things later
regarding solids - i gave these early on, prob personally not at 6 months
you could google baby led solids and see what you think
In reality, he's only 6 months old. DD (although she had health issues) lived on fruit for the first 3 months or so of solids.
As long as he is having plenty of breastmilk or formula, then I wouldn't be too worried about his solid intake.
My advice (and you don't have to take it, lol), would be to keep him on fruit until you feel he is ready for veggies. And if that's not for another 8 weeks, then so be it.
Hopefully someone else will pop in here. I've always been relaxed on what DD eats, as long as she has some fruit I don't mind.
Check out the info on BLS and YouTube BLS. There is a difference between gagging and choking. At 6 mnths my DS was eating steamed to carrots, broccoli, zucchini etc... In a finger food style. It's all about fun at this age.
we did a combination of baby led solids (BLS - which is the sort of thing your health nurse is talking about) & some spoon feeding. there's a section of the forum dedicated to BLS & a general chatter thread about it - Baby Led Solids - it's a good place to get started if you're interested babies may gag (different from choking) on some foods but they won't choke if they're the right size (like fingers) & cooked till soft.
at 6 months i wouldn't be overly concerned about whether or not your DS is eating vegies - i know there's theories that you try & give them vegies first so they don't have a taste for sweet things like fruit, but i know my DS wasn't keen on vegies but has come to enjoy them more as he's got older (he's 2.5 years).
i think the best thing you can do is not to stress too much (easier said than done, of course!) - your DS is still little & it's mostly about experimenting at this age because milk is still his number 1 source of nutrition.
and please don't feel like you're getting everything wrong, we all learn on the job as we go along! and there are lots of different ways to do things - many of which are about personal preference rather than a right way or a wrong way
If he likes fruit - could you mix the fruit and veg in together if you are doing puree's? Eg if his fav fruit is peaches for example - make a mix of pumpkin and peach (more peach) so he still gets the taste he likes, and trial different fruit and vegie combo's
Then you could gradually make it less fruit and more vegies
That works!! I agree!
Hannah hated veggies, but there's a squeezy bag (raffertys garden I think) that is 70% apple, but it's got spinach, peas and broccoli in it. That was DD's favourite for a long time.
My 3.5 year old still won't eat vegies, hower they are or arent cooked. Literally the only thing she will eat is frozen peas that are still frozen - if I heat them she won't eat them. She's also probably the only kid on the planet that won't eat chips from places like McDonalds, Red Rooster etc.
FWIW, I was really worried about her not eating any vegies, but only fruit and raised it with her paed. He's pretty happy so long as she is eating one or the other, so try not to stress too much - especially at this stage when your LO is so young. Food is really for play at this point, not nutrition.
only suggestion I can make is offering veggies - whether as part of the meal with meat etc, or other ways like with hommus, natural yoghurt, salsa, avacado, as a soup, with bolognaise, etc - lots of different ways, different textures, different temperatures etc.
and only offer fruit/sweet yoghurt/etc *after* mains.
while DS still favours grapes and banana over carrots and pumpkin, he'll eat a lot more veggies when there's no fruit on display
