Advice please: When to drop the 2am express

    Hi everyone,
I am hoping for some advice. I am currently exclusively breastfeeding my 15 week old twin girls. They are on 3 hourly feeds during the day, in bed by 7pm, dream feed at 10pm, and sleeping until between 5 and 7am most mornings. The only problem is that I am still getting up at 2am to express. This is when I express the most, and as I am getting around 300ml at this time, I am freezing and have saved up a great stash. I plan to breastfeed until 6 months and stop in the hope of getting my cycle back so we can try for #3.

My question is, when can I give up the 2am express, and will this effect my day time supply? I am super paranoid about having enough for both girls, and don't want to compromise the short time I will be breastfeeding them, and am pretty proud they haven't had formula since my milk came in.

Any ideas, or do I just continue, I guess it is only another 10 weeks or so. Your thoughts? TIA xx

That's not an easy question hun! Firstly, with regard to the supply during the day. You should be able to produce enough milk for two babies - it works on supply and demand, so as long as they both feed, you will make enough for them both. It is true that feeding/expressing at night keeps your hormone levels higher, however from a supply point of view, if they are feeding every 3 hours during the day, I would think you could drop the 2am express without too much (or any) effect. I guess the main thing is whether or not you need the frozen milk. It sounds like you are not using much, if any of it at the moment. What are you planning on doing with it - is it just for emergencies, or would you like to use it once you wean so they can keep having breast milk for longer? I think that is probably the main consideration - how much do you need the milk you are getting. And how much would you prefer to be sleeping at that time!!!

I'm sorry I'm not much help, but I hope you work it out.
