    Baby yoghurt

I don't have to buy the commercial packaged baby yoghurt do I? As long as it is full fat 'natural' that should be ok. I am planning on using the 'easi-yo' brand, unless there is a reason why I shouldn't.
I like the convenience of it, especially as I live in the country and the shop sells limited varieties and shuts at 1230 Saturdays and not open Sundays.
Eventually could I use flavoured varieties? Obviously not strawberry but banana?
For my bub I am planning on adding different fruit purees to take the bite out if it.

    Thanks

I use the Jalna or Mungella natural unflavoured yoghurts as they are pot set (so no thickeners).

Yep, full fat natural is fine, then can add anything you like. I too buy Jalna.

'baby yoghurts' are full of extra additives and sugar that are unnecessary for bubs.

I can't comment specifically on easy-yo as i have no idea whats in it, but i presume no added sugar so that's a good start.

I use to use Jalna too for DS. He loved it.
We now have to buy either Wiggles or Dora (as since his gastro he'll only eat something that has those pictures on it but yeh theyre all good.

Off topic but kelxx could you wash out the yoghurt containers and put the jalna yoghurt in it? Or would he know? I am sure you can buy wiggles bowls etc could you put it in that?
I personally don't like all the 'kids' youghurts because of the additives. Some of the 'dairy desserts' have to be full of colours and preservatives. I remember years ago there was bright blue one which smelt awful. So can't be good for them. Ok for a treat on the odd occassion but not something I want my DS eating regularly.

Thanks Luey. It works just the same if i was to buy the wiggles or dora ones as to jalna.. just easier when we're going out etc.. but they are all no added preservatives, flavours or colours. Theyre all natural. Theyre not dairy deserts, theyre the proper full fat yogurt. All the wiggle's foods (biscuits/poppers etc) are all natural with no added anything.. which i think is great when you have fussy kids like mine. You know theyre still getting something good for them, not packed full of sugar.
    Thanks for the tips though!

I buy Jalna too - it's one of the few yoghurts that have not got added sugar. I haven't seen a kiddies yoghurt without the nasties.... what's the story with that??? . I mostly use Paris Creek - absolutely delish!

Most importantly read the labels and ensure there are no thickeners, additives and processed sugar (sugarcane)... Sugar (sugar cane - processed sugar will be listed as Only natural ingredients... Just to baffle!

Kelxx - I have not seen a baby yoghurt without sugar - just have a look on the label - maybe you have found one that doesn't but I haven't seen one. I just buy the Paris Creek for the whole family - just the natural one and add stewed apples, mashed banana, etc etc. It saves on packaging too which is better for the Earth!

Actually if you look at both Jalna and the Wiggles/Dora yogurts, Jalna has more Carbohydrate sugars and saturated fats than the wiggles do... (im talking the vanilla or strawberry ones). Unless you buy the whole milk natural or greek yogurts, theres no real difference.. other than taste. I bought the natural whole milk ones to start with for DS and he didnt like them.. i dont blame him.. theyre too bitter.. yuck

No, I only use natural yoghurt & only choose one without sugar - that is cane sugar or processed sugar (if I buy flavoured) and add fruit so they don't get the cane sugar. The Dora and Wiggles yoghurt has 12grams of processed sugar per serve.

My kids have only ever had yoghurt that way - the natural fruit sweetens it and adds a nice contrast in taste. Immy just finished off her bowl just now!

Yeh.. so does Jalna.. if you compare on the websites.. its exactly the same. Jalna actually has a little more.
Also the Paul's ones have real fruit added, which can account for the sugar.. fruit has fructose.
But for sure, if that works for you, go with it. I just have a fussy little bugger!

Sorry Kel but it doesn't. I have it here in front of me. The natural Jalna yoghurt has no sugar. The flavoured varieties are only sweetened with juice not sugar. Jalna has no cane sugar - the sugars it contains come from fruit (fructose) and milk (lactose). The sugar from most commercial yoghurts is cane sugar or processed sugar.

It is the cane sugar that babies are best not to have. That is why unsweetened natural yoghurt is best. If you add your own fruit to it it will have a sugar content of course but it is fructose not the very processed sugar cane that is used in most commercial yoghurts,
It is just another consumeristic trick that the big companies pull to make Mamas believe that it's all good...

All yoghurt will have a carb content as it's a dairy product which is a carb - it's the added cane sugar that is good to look out for for little ones,

    From the Jalna website:

    All Natural Ingredients

Jalna Yoghourts and Yoghourt On The Go are made from all-natural ingredients from wholefoods, with no added cane sugar or artificial sweeteners. Fructose, a natural sugar in fruit, and lactose, a natural sugar in milk, are the only sugars in Jalna dairy foods.

    Real Fruit

The delicious taste of Jalna fruit Yoghourts or Yoghourt On The Go is created using real fruit purees and natural flavours. We use real apricots or berries or peaches or mango or apples or pineapples or grapes or bananas, so you can taste the delicious, natural flavours.

    Nothing Artificial

But it isn?t just what we put into Jalna products that make them true to nature, it is also what we leave out. There are no preservatives, artificial flavours or colours and no food acids or gelatine ? the cultures (La-5? Lactobacillus acidophilus, BB-12? bifidobacterium, Lc-01? Lactobacillus casei) produce the ?set?, creamy smoothness and texture naturally.

I was referring to the strawberry and vanilla ones, as i said. The strawberry and vanilla Jalna are pretty much similar to the Dora and Wiggles yogurts. I was just saying that the sugar in both of them is natural sugars. I wasnt questioning your way of adding fruit. I was referring to the flavoured yogurts.. and In my case my DS didnt like the natural ones.

As i also said.. if that works for you, absolutely go with it.. but it doesnt for my son.
