I have two wonderful sons and the younger one (who will turn 2 years old the end of next month) is still enjoying breastfeeding. He has an early morning feed as soon as he wakes up and a bedtime feed just before he goes to bed. I am happy with this routine and was intending to continue through the winter at least unless DS#2 thought otherwise.
Well, then this morning when he was laying in bed with my and nursing on the left side he kept letting go (or it would fall out not sure which) and then he would suck it back in really quickly. It hurt but I didn't think too much about it - mainly because I was still half asleep. But when I got out of the shower this morning I noticed what looked like could have been a blister on my nipple. I don't really know how to explain it but the skin that has "pulled away" for lack of a better term, looks similar to a blister that has been popped and drained of the fluid and therefore it is a bit wrinkly??? I have no idea if that makes sense.
So anyway, I dried it carefully and put some Paw Paw ointment on it and it is still quite sore this afternoon.
My thoughts and concerns are this... should I let him nurse on that side at bedtime tonight? Should I rest it? Should I wean completely? Should I just wean the morning feed and let him continue the night feed since I am awake then and able to monitor his attachment and position (we nurse on the lounge or the rocking chair as opposed to the bed during the morning feed)!
I DON'T really want to wean but I had mastitis three times with this baby in the early days and I'm terrified of that happening again! Thoughts and suggestions would be mightily appreciated!!!!!
Sounds like his positioning and latch have given you a little blister like you say. I definitely wouldn't wean over it It should heal fast. I've had multiple times things like this happened, but if you can give that side a little break and be careful with his latch it should heal in no time.
Since he's only feeding twice a day you may be able to just feed from one side tonight without getting too full and just be careful with the latch the next few feeds (it would be fine to feed on that side if you/he want to try, just be careful). Also at that age he should understand if it hurts you and you can teach him to open wide and be gentle etc

I think he was just *playing* with you - and unfortunately did some damage, If he tries it again tell him ot to do it, it hurts! He's old enough to understand. He will stop doing it - you are going great - this is just a hiccup which will be quickly forgotten, and you can go on to breastfeed fine
