Breast pump.

So we are pregnant with our second child. First pregnancy/delivery/breast feeding was a huge failure.

I am wondering if it would be worth purchasing a breast pump this time round?

What did other people do?

Hi.
Sounds like things did not go well for you last time. Do you feel like elaborating on it at all? Most mothers don't really need a breast pump - what they need is good information and support to breastfeed. Have you considered taking a breastfeeding education class with the ABA? The fee also includes membership, giving you access to heaps of additional information and support.

BF also didn't work out for me and when I was pregnant again with my second, I did the same thing as you are probably doing - thinking about what went wrong and how to set yourself up for success. I think I even posted the same question about breast pumps!

For me, thinking about everything that happened and doing a class were the best thing for me. That being said, even though most people on this forum advised me that I was unlikely to need a pump I bought one anyway. It was like a safety blanket for me, knowing that if something went wrong at 3 am and it was needed, I had the tools to deal with it.

That being said, I sold it after only using it a few times as I didn't really need it at all!

Good luck. As MadB says, doing an education class was the best thing to set myself up to win the second time.

I used a breast pump, but mostly because I was heading back to work reasonably soon. Not sure if I would have otherwise.

What have your issues been?

Same with me. I went to the hospitals breastfeeding refresher class. When in hospital I engaged the lactation consultant to talk through the issues I had and we worked on a plan to overcome the issues I was going through. A week after having bubs I had a follow up one on one class with the LC. I also called the ABA a few times. I never purchased or hired a breast pump because supply wasnt an issue for me. I did use nipple shields for the first 4 weeks due to attachment issues and damaged nipples but weaned DD off them. DD is now 14 weeks and all is going well.
