It's very individual, I think. We are all unique and our ability to get nutrients from our food also varies. That's why there's such a variation in the amount of milk that different babies take - they all take around the same amount each day between 1-6 months, but it can vary from 600-1200mL!

Ladylove, any antibiotics? Illness in the family?

    Ok, thanks ladies.

My milk has come in tonight. . Spent ages under a hot shower last night, which I have no doubt helped a little (anything better than nothing!), but my bb's so big, I can't do up my bra, lol. And Mack has been working on just one side for aboit an hour, with no signs of bb being empty... and I'm ready to go back to sleep. Oh well, there's always later for that. I tried to get him to take the left side to start with, but I think maybe it was overfull for him and he was getting frustrated. If I ever get to put him down I will have to try and express some.

Netix. That early engorgement is so painful. It should pass in 2 -3 days. Feeding as often as you can will help so your little man is already doing all the right things. If you feel really uncomfortable, a one-off full express from both sides can really help. This helps all the lymphatic fluid that is trapped in there to drain as well so that when you refill it shouldn't be quite as bad. It worked for me and boy was it a relief. Although you should have seen the look on the midwife's face when she saw that I had expressed 440ml in one sitting - and then when I told her that I'd thrown some out as well as I'd run out of bottles Also, doing it once is not going to stop your supply settling down.

Manta Ray; hadn't thought of doing a full on express. I think, and it has just come to me, because I really don't think they have breast pumps here. So far (and everything crossed!) mack has beeb doing a very good job, if not a little slow (only cos tired mummy wants to go back to sleep).

Blackrose; yep. Was up nursing. From about 4am to 7.30ish. And a twenty minute nap in the middle. Then got woken up by the dr who wanted to examine Mack, but not me. Rude sod. I feel a complaint coming on. He is not very nice, being ignored (I am yet to be looked at by any dr since delivery) is not my only issue with him.

Netix I know that feeling- I looked like Barbie when my milk came in. I also felt really hot and flushed in my chest area. Wet compresses and lots of feeding helped me best.

And boo to the doctor! That's pretty negligent- that you haven't been examined yet.

Hotl could be teething- no sign of teeth though.

MadB no illness symptoms and no antibiotics. She has had a couple of full on hysterical episodes though- super high pitched screaming and hard to console, very clingy. But in between, and for the most part, she is content and bubbly.

She seems to be suffering intense wind at times too... Or something like that.

Little monkey has taken to clamping down at the end of a feed if I offer again and she's done. I've done the push her into my bb a little more move and that seems to make her let go. Now, when she's done, she's off and I'm not offering again! She's such a quick feeder I assume this means she's just giving me the final 'no thanks, Mum'.

We're going to start offering family foods come six months on Wednesday. Where has the time gone? I'm not sure she's going to do much more than play with it, since mostly she seems very interested in textures and fingering things, not so much in 'eating' them.

    Jen,
my little guy is doing that too.. thinks its the funniest thing ever to him - not to me! thank gosh he doesnt have teeth yet!! trying to get him out of the habit before the teeth come in! i have been getting him off, saying No and lying him down for a minute. sometimes take two times to get the msg through but most times just the once. I think i just need to remember to pop him off with my finger cuz i tend to just pull him off out cuz it is hurting a bit... naughty me!

DS has been on food for about two weeks now and is loving it. He has been trying something of everything we have given him! i cant beleive he is six months old on thursday! i agree where has the time gone and where is my little baby boy?? although i have to say i am in LOVE with his little personality that is just starting to come through.. He loves attention and definately knows how to work a crowd!

Jennifer they do get to be very efficient, can finish in 5-10mins each side. Id take it that she's telling you she's had enough. DS did that, once I knew fixed it straight up.

6-12 months of food is all about experimenting and not so much on amount in. They should get most of their nutrients through bm. So advice I can give is to just try and relax with it. Don't stress about how much or how little they've eaten. Just let them enjoy it, coz you don't want them to dislike meal times.

This dr really sucks. I wont miss him if he leaves!

Anyway, i did *try* to have a shower and express, but it was cut very short when i could hear Mack still crying, brought back into my room, because the nurse had to tend to someone coming up from surgery (you know you're in a country town when they send not juwt women, but men and kids to the midwifery ward!). I tried getting Mack to finish feeding totally on one side, but it certainly doesnt feel like it jas happened. Now have to try and express the whole other bb, out of the shower.

I HATE trying to express by hand, especially out of the shower. It's too hard. Maybe just because I have a splitting headache? No, it really is too hard. And painful. Looks like bad sleep for me again.

Sahti is 15 months now, and we're still breastfeeding! Who woulda thunk it.

    Anyhoo - hey
