I had such an "aaawwww" breastfeeding moment today - DD was feeding and she put both her hands onto my bb, took her mouth away from the nipple and then pushed her head into my bb and sort of gave it a hug... I know it wasn't an on purpose move but aaaawwww so cute.

Gigi, while I am sorry you experienced such awful treatment I love hearing how you have come through stronger in your commitment to bilby to continue feeding her.
TK I love the image you inspired of DD - so cuteI got my first smiles while feeding I have some truly precious moments while we are feeding. DS can be so cheeky now and will play peek - a - boo with my shirt while feeding but somehow manages to stay attached while smiling.
AFM I cut out the midnight feed about 6 weeks ago. Now DS still wakes up but is happy with just a cuddle and going back to sleep with me. If he is sick or really hot then I would still feed him but I haven't had to... We have had the odd night where he hasn't woken up until 3/4am instead of 12am. So my mission is to cut out the feed from that second wake up.
I have a party tomorrow night and for the first time I am a bit nervous about feeding DS. I know there will be at least 1 guest who would be uncomfortable if I feed him, and it's another woman who I would have expected some solidarity...hrmmm not sure what to do... will just wing it and feed him as discreetly as possible.

Can I just say teeth suck. Im sick of getting bitten because a) he gets distracted or b) he thinks its funny to hear Mama squeal likea banshee.

Had a lovely breastfeed yesterday. DS, DH and I had a picnic in the park. After DH left to go back to work, DS and I hung out in the shade under a tree and he had a feed. It was really lovely being outside in the fresh air with my beautiful little boy feeding peacefully... Awww

Yes Anna it does get better, do you find he is biting at the end of the feed? you might have to cut a few feeds a bit shorter then normal so he get's the idea that if he bites then he doesn't get any more... DS would mainly bite when he was teething too but I haven't had a bite in months yay!!

outdoor feeding is so lovely Sterla, your own portable milkbar, that is always the right temp for your bub.
bilby is just about to turn three, and she STILL loves to play peekaboo with my clothing. It's weird, at three years in, i no longer ever feel "full", no more milk sprays, no leaking etc, but there must be something there, bilby is so keen for booby milk.
times you see your baby relishing your milk, those spontaneous giggles and smiles, being in raptures over enjoying their drink, that's what warms your heart, everytime.
Anna, i think every baby goes through biting, because every baby grows teeth, wants to explore with said teeth and needs to learn the limits of what to do with teeth, e.g not bite mummy!
i tried the "firm voice, no, remove baby" but it wasn't enough to solve it for us. Then i posted here on BB and got a response from a breastfeeding counsellor, who re-trained me in POSITION you hold your baby to feed, and re-learning about how to position your nipple in the BACK PALETTE of the baby's mouth. By doing those two things, it makes it physically impossible (or very difficult) for the baby to bite you. I had been taught ideal feeding HOLDING position and all about the putting the nipple in the back palette, back when i was heavily pregnant, but by the time bilby had teeth, and wanted to bite me, i had forgotten how to do it, and/or had gotten lazy with how i held her to feed.
so re-learning those two things, made the world of difference, THE BITING STOPPED!!
also, other things to try
- use breastfeeding jewerelly
(safe size for babies so they won't choke, worn by mother so child can play with jewerelly whilst being fed, no dangerous little metal bits that could be yanked off)
- give child an apple to sink their teeth into, if they need to get that out of their system
biting is VERY painful, i remember thinking, "this is going to be the deal breaker" if this goes on, UNTIL i found out about the position to hold baby and the back palette thing. That was a lightbulb moment for me.
Just remember, if biting WAS a deal breaker, the human race wouldn't have survived, and the cave women didn't have ABA to ring up for help. i may be odd, but i find this reassuring.

So as I sit here in stunned silence that this peacefully sleeping girl in my arms is 4 months old in just a few short days - I am even more blown away by the fact that she is still exclusively breastfed! Yes, I am doing it!!! WOOHOO!!
She has been putting on good weight. Went from the 25th to 50th percentile at first, the weights you have seen, but she has since been following the 50th percentile curve just fine. A couple of weeks there she'd put on nothing, but then the next week she is where she is meant to be.
Feels so good to be doing it all on my own!

woo hoo Inertia, that's wonderful news. i love the sounds of the newborns suckling, they are such noisy suckers, have to work so hard to get their milk. Enjoy your lovely little 4 month old.
it's all coming together for you, that's wonderful! with all the pressure to FF, it IS an achievement for you to be feeding her, WELL DONE!
so much emphasis on the weight gains at the start, it evens out in the end. you know yourself, it's the allover picture that counts, skin tone, does she look healthy, does she fill multiple wet nappies each day etc, not just numbers on a scale.

Stellan had his 6mth needles today super off schedule (lol) and they did the usual weigh and measure. At 7.5mths exclusively breastfed he is a whopping 9.02kg and a smidge under 70cm long. I am so stoked; yay Stellan, yay boobs and yay me :woot:

just thought i'd pop in even though as well as BF, I'm expressing and giving DS formula, I feel this thread may be brilliant for me to learn from, although i'm already tempted to throw the towel in on BFing!

bfing is hard work at the start - well, that's what i found! it does get easier though. what's giving you the most grief? it must be tough combing expressing, formula & bfing.

sloane - I think whats giving me grief is the constant cracks on the nipples that I get (along with the feeling of swords going through your bbs every time DS sucks), which is why I express (I have a manual pump which is so good).. There's no attachment issues, he's great at the latching and attaching - I just don't understand how come I get them all the time. We do formula for him when we know we'll be out for a while and there are no mothers rooms, that's really the only time we do formula for him.. Otherwise it's boob or EBM.

LJ see a LC!! Seriously! That's the best advice I've got. People told me that attachment was perfect too and I had cracks and grazes, OUCH!! If you have cracked nipples and it hurts it is NOT right!! See someone who can help and don't let them tell you it's right if it hurts! I had to see 4 different LC's before it got better.

Bit of a breastfeeding woohoo for me today
As some of you may know, I b/f using nipple shields. We had problems with attachment early on, and a LC recommended using NS. I did and they worked really well, and before I knew it we were feeding with them full time and DS would simply refuse to feed without them (he'd screw up his face like "What on earth is this mum?" and cry till I put the NS back on). I saw a LC to try and wean us off the NS, but it didn't work. Looking back, I think I could have tried harder - but I was so scared about it causing breast refusal that I didn't persevere for as long as I probably should have (a few of my baby buddies had bubs start refusing boob, and it ended with them stopping b/f, so I was pretty worried about it).
A few times here and there I have tried without the NS, but have never had any success... until today!!!
I brought DS into bed with me this morning and he had a feed. He had basically fallen asleep, so I took off the NS. But then, in his sleepy state DS started searching around for more... and my bare -nipple was right there - and he latched on! He had a few lazy sucks, and you know what - it felt like he was attached properly and everything! I was so surprised and happy I almost cried. DS continued to lazily feed his sleepy state, and slowly started to rouse. Even awake he still fed. He'd even come off, then attach himself again! Once he'd woken up a bit, he did slip of and just suck my nipple - OUCH!!! But still...
I'd basically given up hope on him ever feeding without the NS - I was just happy to still be b/f. Now I'm starting to think maybe it is possible - maybe he will start to feed without NS!
This is a huge woohoo for me! I hope it wasn't a once off, but I guess we'll see...
