you can attach her while you are siiting up, and then lay down.

sometimes when they are little, you might need a face washer or small pillow under their head or your breast to get both at similar levels.

Ladies I know I'm always full of questions so I hope you don't mind if I ask another- it's about pumping. DD has been waking up more often at night which is fine, however I've been caught out a couple of times as I usually have a glass of wine or champagne after dinner as she *usually* doesn't wake up for a feed until around midnight or 1 but with her random night wakings she has actually woken up anywhere between 8:30 and 10 a few times. We've decided hubby can give her EBM as a dream rollover feed around 9:30 but I'm not sure when to pump- should it be in the evening so my body knows she is wanting an extra feed then (as I will BF instead of EBM sometimes- like when hubby is away) or should I pump in the morning when I can pump a lot more milk? In the evenings I can only get about 40-50 ml from both breasts combined but in the morn it's closer to 100ml.

i have no idea ladylove =P but am interested in an answer too, cause i plan on having some expressed but not sure when to do it...

I have like a million questions too....most urgently, how long after you eat something does it affect bub? last night she screamed and screamed obviously had a sore tummy and it was for hours =( my poor baby. I'm thinking i ate something but have no idea how to narrow it down... I did eat some potato bake which had raw onion in it about 12 hours before she got distressed...is it likely to be that?

I never knew how long things took to get in milk either but I think raw oinion and tomato seem to be something that affects my DS with fussiness and lots of fluffs so I avoid it. Cant help with the time factor tho sorry teirae

With regards to pumping - I pump every morning about a 1.5hrs after DS breakfast feed (feeds three hourly) and def get more - I do it every day and get close to 100mls every morning. Some days more others a bit less. I find this easier to maintain Ever day then at night (when im tired and bein lazy and cuz like u said lady love u do have a bit less in the PM) and in the beginning I never knew when his night wakes would be and often was concerned I would pump too much and then he would wake just after!
I think if u are always going to give him the milk as EBM then it wouldn't matter if u do the pump always in the AM - if u ever were going to BF him that feed then it might be better for ur boob clock to do pumping at the same time so when u do BF those feeds the milk is there?

As u can see from my ticker - I am new to all this so please feel free to disregard my advice if someone else says differently!

Good luck with the pumping -i have a great stash in our freezer (requiring us to now buy a second freezer cuz we can't fit any food in there lol) and I'm heading back to work next week and I have just purchased a double pump to make that easier as well. having EBM is great as I can leave DS at home for some daddy time or the grandparents can give him a feed when I am out as well. He is great with a bottle thankfully - as long as I'm not there!!

Good luck! I found pumping really helped our growth spurts as my boobs in the morning were already producing nearly an extra feed so when he started needing more milk it just meant I pumped out a bit less after the feed for a few days and then it built up again.

Sorry for the long rambles! Lol

T, there are lots of reasons bubs may be unsettled or screaming. It may not have anything to do with your milk at all. It's a common refrain - you must eat x to breastfeed. You mustn' eat x (x100!) to breastfeed. The evidence, as we know it, however, is that most of the time there's no need to restrict you diet at all.
Do you have a family history of allergies or intolerances? That's often the best pointer o whether you're likely to have these sorts of issues. The most common being dairy.
Caffiene is something else that can affect young babies as it takes so long for them to metabolise.

To my knowledge, there's no evidence that things like onions, garlic, cabbage etc have any effect on babies.

Teirae, DS1 always went mental if i drank apple juice before feeding him, so i cut it out. They also say chocolate is a no no, and i did have a bucket of m&m's once because i was so stressed out, and he definitely did not like that (bugger), but it could be a million things. Especially at your bubs young age. Up to a month old (my experience) their guts need to get used to the milk and not being in your tummy, particularly the first two weeks. Once they are doing regular poos, its much better. I fed lying down alot in the first few weeks this time, esp at night and found that it helped with my tiredness, and helped to establish breast feeding too, as i would fall asleep and DS2 would suck for hours (more comfort sucking really) but it definitely hepled all around.

As for pumping LL, i find that its best to pump at the time you are substituting the feed for, but thats just me, and you could really do it whenever you want, particularly if supply is not an issue. If supply is an issue, i would try not to do it just before a feed. Also, if DS is not particularly hungry, i will pump after that feed, so my body still continues to increase supply at this age.

When DS had broncialitis, i was pumping all the time to keep supplyup, as he wasnt eating much, so i have a good store in the freezer!!

    Good luck!

Well her feeds have been a bit odd lately due to her combo of either screaming at the boob or being stupendously but happily distracted. Sometimes she tells me she's finished in 5 or minutes. Yet she's not demanding more frequent feeds - oh except the couple of extra night wake ups.

Tei, I just didn't have onion or garlic at all for the first 3 months. Brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, cauli, kale) were less of an issue, they were out of season anyway. But i never bothered to work out the time, I just didn't eat it. I have a few friends who are Jain eaters so it was no big deal to cut them and still have great food. Chocolate was definitely a no-no for me; I think that's one of nature's cruelest blows, to deny chocolate to a new mum.

LL - great trick for distraction is a quick squirt of milk in the ear. Don't know if it's coincidental, but a nice bonus is that DD has never had an ear infection

    Thanks MadB!!!!

I know some babies are just windy... but would poor attachment affect it? like if she isn't attached properly she is sucking air as well as milk and that contributes to it??

I've heard that if the attachment isnt right then yeh they can gulp air as well. Kinda like if they don't have the bottle teat in their whole mouth. We got told we didn't have to burp our baby - but we tended to just give Him a quick pat and he did fantastic burps lol. We just don't burp for hours on end like apparently my mum used to do UNTIL a burp came out.

Teirae, yep if bub doesn't get a good seal she can swallow more air with her milk. My DS used to squeak and take in alot of air. Sitting bub up after can help some of the air come up, DS has reflux so we don't bang his back but just rub and sit him up.

I think that can happen, yeah. How is attachment? no damage/pain?
Mostly it's just their immature digestive system, I think. It takes time for them to get used to digesting stuff

My DD2 gulps so fast she can give herself a bellyache and wind. Her attachment is perfect, but my gushing supply and her greediness means she needs to burp. A gentle pat on the bottom and holding her upright works quickly.

DD1 as a baby used to gently burp when changing sides. Much easier and more ladylike!

Jen, do you reckon there is the gushing cos our breasts got used to feeding a toddler, and don't revert back to help out the newborn?

Is there likely to be more gushing 2nd or 3rd times around?

ah yeah, fast flow can do that, too. Both of mine have struggled with teh flow in the first few months. seems to get easier for them when they're a bit bigger.

I think I gushed both times lol but even more this time cause she was such a fast feeder with a strong suck from birth. It had to help that she never had any drugs in her system too.

Yes Honor has always been a fast feeder too - and a strong sucker! Once she accidentally latched onto the skin under my nipple and it hurt!

Going to have a bit of a grumble tonight - I don't normally give a fig whether or not people might conceivably be offended by me feeding DS whenever and where-ever he wants to be fed, but have recently found out that a "friend" in a social club I am part of has been complaining and *****ing about me behind my back. I'm a bit peevish mainly because rather than talk to me about it she's decided to gang up with a couple of others and have a backstab session. Thankfully a few of my real friends stood up for me and told her to pull her head in, but ugh.

And to be honest, it's not like she could see much any way. I might not use a cover or blanket, but there's not usually much skin on show.
