    tomato's

    Just wondering...

I know this was a bit silly, but last night DH gave Jesse a taste of tomato. I didn't know til he'd already done it, but didn't really think about it coz he was enjoying it.
Anyway DH came & laid him down next to me after & I noticed a rash on his chin & cheeks. Pretty much everywhere the tomato touched him.

Do you think this would've been just coz he's so young & his skin is still sensitive & tomato's are very acidic, or an allergic reaction?

I freaked at first, thinking it was an allergy & that his throat was gonna close up, but then I used my brain & figured it was probably just coz it was tomato.
The rash was gone within 15 - 20 minutes.

Can't be sure but I've never heard of anyone having a tomato allergy. My guess is you're right and its probably the acidity of the tomato on his sensitive little skin.

Yes could be the acidity on his skin...I couldnt eat tomatoes for the first 4 months without my little mans bum getting red afterwards.
just keep an eye on it when he's older and maybe keep a note in a book somewere

Tomatoes are high in salicylites and acid. I have found Jovie to be quite sensitive to them, so we don't eat more than 1 tomato based meal a week. Salicylites (sp?) are natural preservatives, but people with food allergies or intolerances are known to react to them if they have too much. I expect the skin rash would be due to the acid content, but like Maz's little man, sometimes they are too much to digest early on as well.

Whenever DD (who is now 16 months) has tomato (or tomato based sauce) she reacts in a rash on her face (nowhere else). She is fine with other acidic foods so we know this is a sensitivity to tomato (but not an actual allergy). My DH's Grandma is allergic to tomatoes so we weren't surprised when DD reacted. Allergies to tomatoes are very uncommon but not unheard of. Perhaps wait until DS is a bit older and try again. If he is reacting to tomato, be careful with other acidic foods such as Orange, Pineapple, and Kiwi Fruit - they can have similar reactions. We found DD was ok with these though.

Thanks you guys. I don't really eat all that much tomato & DH doesn't touch it. I definetly won't be giving any more to him till he's well over 12 months. I won't be game enough. It didn't bother him, but I feel so guilty now.
