    Breastfeeding when pregnant Chatter Thread

So, I just thought I'd start a thread for all of us out there who are breastfeeding while pregnant. I thought it might come in handy for anything that comes up, or if we want to share or ask anything .

I found that breastfeeding made it harder to tell that I was pregnant to begin with. When I fell pregnant with DS I just knew, but this time round I had no clue! Also, I noticed lots of changes in my breasts when I was first pregnant with DS, but nothing this time round - I'm assuming because they're still in use!

Another thing I'm sort of concerned about is the possibility of DS weaning himself because I'm pregnant. I know it's fairly common.

Anyway, I hope someone else will come and talk to me .

    Hey

Im 10 weeks pregnant and still bf my 21 month old.

I totally agree:I found that breastfeeding made it harder to tell that I was pregnant to begin with. When I fell pregnant with DS I just knew, but this time round I had no clue! Also, I noticed lots of changes in my breasts when I was first pregnant with DS, but nothing this time round - I'm assuming because they're still in use!

My nipples are starting to change again though and are really sore,

Im actually hoping DS will self wean, He really went off the breast for a week or two, I thought we were done around week 7-8 of pregnancy,

but hes ravenous for them again
I definately want to wean him before I get a big belly.....

Sterla, I'm sorry I don't count, but I did bf while pg for 4 1/2 months. I was just like you - with DS1 I knew I was pg, just knew, before I even POAS. With DS2 I had no clue. DH knew as I was showing by 3 weeks (joys of falling pg again under a year), but I had no clue at all until he finally convinced me to POAS.

Sadly my DS1 was one of those toddlers who weaned himself. But the fact that I was working and he was already having fewer bfs wouldn't have helped either, and we still got half way through. I know many others who have got all the way through and been able to tandem feed so you have a good chance hun.

Thank you for starting this thread. It's a great idea. I'm going to move it into the breastfeeding area for you and let's hope we gets lots of people joining in!

Mum2Romone: Thanks for joining me . Sounds like we've had similar experiences (you to MantaRay) with not knowing we were pregnant second time around.
I'm in two minds about whether I want DS to self wean while I'm pregnant. I think I'll be okay with it if DS is okay with it, but for now DS is so desperately dependent on his booby! I feed a fair bit through the day, especially in the morning, and I still feed him to sleep for his day sleep, and feed him to 'sleepy' when he goes to bed for the night. On top of that, I still feed him overnight. I would at least like to have DS night wean before 'Twinkle' comes along - getting up and feeding a toddler and a newborn through the night seems like far, far too much work!

MantaRay: Thanks for moving the thread, and you're welcome in here anytime to share your experience .

    Oh can I join???

I did know I was pg straight away (because I saw my first ovulation signs and then felt all those twinges of early pg) but it took ages to show on the HPT. I have also had tender nipples on and off, so i knew something was up.

DD feeds to sleep and has two feeds in the day as well as a cluster feed session from about 5am. I don't know what I will do without the boobies!

I am in two minds about weaning. Part of me wuold love her to self wean, but only when she's over 2, because that was my goal. BUT I think its in the hands of the god/dess now. She is already saying "no milk" at some feeds, and I feel very empty. In fact my breasts are the smallest they've been in years (which is the opposite to my pg with DD when they were huuuge!)

The idea of her weaning makes me so sad, but there are some days/nights when I just want some peace and space! She is pretty obsessed though!!!

Just sneaking in here as not quite ready to announce but am 4 weeks 4 days pregnant and still bf DD twice a day morning and night and just wondering when bf might feel different and if feels different for everyone? At the moment DD seems to not feed for quite as long and is kneading my bb's alot, but has been through phases like this before. I actually tested a couple of days before AF was late because she pointed at my stomach and said "baby" and she has been more clingy and cuddly could this be related to pregnancy.

Welcome wysiwyg, and a big congratulations on your pregnancy!!!

Breastfeeding didn't feel any different for me in those first few weeks, apart from me being grumpy about feeding him to sleep because I felt so sick all the time! What happened with me is that my milk dried up suddenly and unexpectedly! DS suddenly went right off booby, was refusing it a lot. But even though I don't have any milk left, DS still comfort sucks once or twice a day.
I don't know if I should consider him weaned as he's not getting any milk? He still comfort sucks though, and he may start feeding more when I start getting colostrum, and when the milk comes after bub is born.

    How is everyone else going?

Mylitta- eek...green!! Glad I don't have that either! What a good idea about the doll! Love your new ticker pic too, he's so grown up now!

wysiwyg- Congrats!! Nothing felt different for me for a while. I think my milk supply dropped a bit in the first tri but more later and my bbs began to hurt while feeding in second tri. That hasn't gone away unfortunately! How cute is that of your DD! She must have known! That is so cool!

Sterla- I think your DS would still be getting some milk even if you don't think there's any. Remember they are pretty efficient at getting it out. I couldn't squeeze a drop out at all before but she was still feeding like normal. I know my milk supply had gone down because my bbs felt totally deflated all the time but I think she was still getting something even if it wasn't much. And now I have the colostrum I guess so she's getting that.

We're still going along the same. DD is getting her molars now so has actually been feeding a bit more than she was.

Welcome ubba, I have stalked that thread too but I am 17th July so just waiting for that one to appear, as expecting to go late again, and dont want to be last one waiting to give birth! Just realised DD gave me big scratches this morning on BBs so maybe she is not so happy with supply at mo. Am sleeping badly which does not help, I don't remember having symptoms this early last time. Waiting for docs to phone me back, most frustrating - normally work goes really quick but today is taking forever.

Docs confirmed pregnancy HCG - 600 on day 30 from LMP - so all looking good, and my endocrinologist has been in touch about what to do with my thyroid levels now - so that is all sorted. DD funny on BF'ing tonight, but it is hot here in MEL and hasn't been hot for ages so is probably just that.

Hi ladies, i have posted here before, but not for a while, i have read back over a few of the posts and sounds like everyone is doing well. DD is down to three feeds a day, morning, afternoon sleep and night sleep. and none over night. We are about to start working on not feeding to sleep anymore, ive been talking to her about me feeding her then putting her to bed and just sitting by the bed and holding her hand while she goes to sleep and she seems ok with that idea, so we will see how that goes, eventually my plan is to move further away from the bed and out the door!!!

I had a question and thought id pose it here..... i was wondering if tandem feeding your toddler could lower your chances of mastitus?! my logic was that when newborn the baby cant drain the milk properly all the time...being so little or maybe your attachment isnt quite right etc, but if you have your profesional BFing toddler feeding too and draining the milk properly would this help avoid mastitus...just thinking of other advantages?

Hi! I wish I'd seen this thread earlier, we've just had DS2 arrive (nearly 4weeks ago). We breastfed all through the pregnancy and didn't look like weaning at any stage even though millkwise there was almost nothing at times. DS was just very committed..and needed boob to go to sleep.I found having such a big boy on my boobs while pregnant quite irritating a lot of the time though. Gotta go but yes beckoes DS came in handy when i was engorged! And he loved to help out!!

May as well stick my head in here - nice to see you Shanti and Heaven! I'm currently about 8 wks along and DS is 25 months and still going! I do have the tender nipples thing, some days worse than others, but usually if I can get through the first few minutes it's not so bad. He is still a bedtime, naptime, and morning feeder, and will sometimes amp up the feeds during the day and wake at night for them if he's sick. But so far so good!

Hi everyone, how are we all going?

So, we are quite close to weaning - though whether it will be me or DS that makes that final decision I'm not sure. The only time DS might have booby now is either before his day sleep, or before bed, and even when he does it's not for long. I think the sensitive nipples you girls were talking about have kicked in here, and TBH I am really not enjoying feeding DS anymore. Seriously, I'm in his room feeding him, but my toes are curling and I'm pulling some pretty interesting facial expressions. I get him off as soon as I possibly can, and if I can, I avoid feeding him. I never thought I would get to the point where I felt this way, but the way it feels now just makes me skin crawl!
DS is coping fine with less feeds though - it seems to be only when he's overtired or already grumpy that he demands a feed, otherwise he can mention it, but not care either way if he has one or not. We have had a few days here and there where he hasn't had a feed at all. Considering how often he was feeding and how demanding he was about having booby when he asked for it a few months ago before I fell pregnant, now he seems fairly indifferent to having it! He still loves having cuddles and kisses though .
I always wanted to get to at least 2 years b/f with DS, but I honestly don't know if it will happen unless the sensitive nipples go away. Maybe if I start getting colostrum and DS is actually taking something from me... maybe it will start feeling normal again . I'm really torn - I don't want to force weaning on DS and I'd really like to get to 2 years with him, but he's barely feeding now and I'm really not enjoying it anymore. I think I could probably wean him completely without too much trouble... but I think I'd always feel bad about it... oh I don't know!!!

A question do your boobs change in size much if bf when pregnant? Just wondering when I should expect any increase if any - went from a DD to a H with DD 1 but are pretty much back to DD now. I seem to remember them growing pretty early last time but just wondering what might happen this time.
