    Feeding and poop

Can someone please tell me if this amount of poop is normal! Dd is 3 weeks today and fully breastfed. She poops so much- I mean I am not sure if it is normal! Since early hours this morning she has done around 8 dirty nappies. It seems excessive??? Also she is feeding a lot...someone searching for it within 30 minutes of a feed - growth spurt already?? I have just rocked her to sleep as I fed her at 12 and by 1 she was wanting another feed - I am demand feeding but doesn't that seem like a lot??? Any advice appreciated!!

    Re: Feeding and poop

I'll answer as I'm sitting here feeding DS2....I'm by no means an expert, but DS feeds every couple of hours and poos at every nappy change...so, yes, 8 nappies a day isn't unusual here. My first was the same poo-wise (though wasn't such a frequent feeder). I make sure I offer both sides at each feed. I'm sure Bub is just making sure your supply is great, maybe comfort sucking a bit too. But it's all normal I believe

    Re: Feeding and poop

There's a huge range of normal with anything to do with babies! And kids for that matter

Anyway, between about one and six months we'd expect a demand fed baby to have between 8 and 12 feeds in 24 hours, sometimes more. The reason I've put it like that is that it isn't about how often they feed, but how many times in 24 hours, because it might be that for some reason baby wants to have two or three feeds close together, then might have a bit of a gap. Who knows?

Seriously. There are heaps of variables as to when and why baby might want a feed. The weather at the moment in most parts of Aust isn't conducive to long, lazy feeding sessions cuddling close to mum. It's more about get on, get some thirst quenching, get off. Repeat. It isn't surprising that lots of babies are wanting lots more feeding ATM! I know I'm drinking heaps more water and for them, that's their water!

So it sounds like she is completely normal Keep it up!

I'm sitting here feeding too... And DS poops every.single.feed as well! Problem with me though is that DS has green poops, so I suspect all these frequent feeds he's not getting enough hind milk. Keeps getting upset tummy and crying lots in the evening. I guess we're still trying to find our rhythm.

    Re: Feeding and poop

DS1 pooped after every feed for ages.

And then randomly would go a couple of days without pooing.

Longest ever was over a week.

Then back to normal. No wind, no pain, nothing... just ... nothing! And then back to constant pooping.

When DD was tiny she was a mega pooper- all sounds perfectly, messily normal. Means she's getting so much good stuff from your clever boobs.

    Re: Feeding and poop

Looks like you have a normal thriving healthy baby. Well done! I bet she is growing like a mushroom. Yup - 8-12 feeds in 24hrs is normal. A poo at every nappy change is normal! And a fabulous sign that she is getting heaps of milk. Some-one mention that they have a “problem” because their baby has green poos sometimes - no, that’s no problem! Just a variation of normal! Don’t stress.Back to your 3 week old. It’s pretty intense in the first few weeks, but things settle down. Have you joined ABA? It’s a fabulous support for new breastfeeding mums
