I have noticed today and yesterday my little C has hard poo. She is only almost 4 weeks old... she usually has watery yellow poo but in the last 24hrs it has turned hard and she hasn't had very much. This afternoon she had a big explosion that was half watery and half hard bits.
I am a bit worried or is this normal? She has just been put on Gaviscon Infant for silent reflux which we started on tuesday, do you think that could be making her poo weird?? the packet says it may cause diarrohea but not hard poo.
It could be the medication, yes. Hard poo is not good - it should be liquidy.
Perhaps stop it and see if that fixes the problem - you should be able to try something else for reflux that is less likely to gum her up.
Gaviscon can cause constipation, when DD started her poos became formed and could be "peeled" off her nappies. She is on Losec twice a day (7.5-10mg each dose) and Gaviscon each feed, if she is having a "good" day I reduce the amount of Gaviscon.
Because you can see that when they throw up after gaviscon it is jelly like, so I guess that's what happens all the way through...
Can you try half a satchet per dose, rather than a full one?
Apparently there is another option of Lacteeze, which doesn't always cause constipation, we haven't tried it yet though.
I'm going to go back to the doctor today Cause the gaviscon only works sometimes and the constipation seems to add to her pain. We had a horrible evening with her and she had a massive spew which she neve does. So going back n trying something else, maybe Zantac.
It sounds like she might need something else, we went straight to Losec, because DD2's was so strong and came on so quickly, she was chocking on her vomit and we couldn't lie her down at all, it neutralizes the stomach acid, so when she does throw up it isn't acidic. The gaviscon is a thickener, which gives the milk more weight to reduce the chances of it coming back up again, but because it thickens it also thickens their poo's.
I hope that the Zantac work for you, we haven't used it so I can't help with what that does.
