I remember this feeling from my first DS after a few months of breastfeeding! My DS2 is 6 months old and feeding 6 or 7 times a day and having two solid feeds as well. By the end of the day, I'm shattered! I almost fainted tonight and apart from that, I'm starving hungry all the time! I eat well during the day and snack in between my many meals, drink plenty of water etc, yet for the last 3 weeks, I'm woken at night by my stomach growling and it takes a fair bit of food to enable me to go back to sleep. I figure I'm making heaps of milk overnight but seriously, being that hungry is annoying! haha
Anyone else ravenous or should I go to the doc for a check up? I just feel continually hungry. I'm sure the tiredness is normal as I'm running around after my 3.5 year old as well.
I am like this, and overnight is worst - I used to have to eat alot overnight when pregnant and that seems to have continued. I also feel very shattered even though I generally get a good nights sleep. I am taking liquid iron supplement (Floradix) which seems to help a bit. I am just glad bananas are cheap again as they are easy for overnight snacks.
I was always starving when pregnant, I had to eat 6-7 time a day Id have breaky, morning tea, early lunch, afternoon tea 1, afternoon tea 2, diner and sometimes a late snack. I wasnt hungry if I ate 2-3hrly longer tthan that and I struggled, I tried to make most of what I ate healthy choices and while I didnt lose any weight while bf I didnt put any on.
Hope your not too hungty right now! From memory your calorie intake is at its highest in your adult life when you are breastfeeding, much higher than when you are pregnant
Same. I eat an incredible amount and am still always hungry. I keep telling DH though, I'm going to feed DS 'till he's 10! I LOVE food so much, and it's awesome to be able to completely indulge this love and not pay for it on my thighs!
Yes, I am starving. I am underweight and I eat three times more than dh. I just had three pieces of spelt toast with beans and cucumber...large pieces of toast. That will do me until 11am when I will cook up lunch, and then at 3:30 I have a big snack, then dinner at 6:30 and another snack before bed at 9:30. It's insane.
I don't love the constant hunger though...I find it debilitating, especially when you get caught out starving and you're away from home.
I'm in the same boat as Arcadia (underweight despite eating waaaaaay more than anyone else I know, lol!). I was the same when BFing DS. I lost 18kg in the first 3 months of DS' life, despite eating 6 big meals a day plus lots of milky drinks. Constantly felt hungry and often felt weak and grumpy with it. I'd take snacks out with me, but still often get caught out. Low GI, high protein is good - and I'd have stuff on hand that's easy to eat so you can grab it easily when you can.
Personally, I think it's normal, but if you're worried, get it checked out - it'll ease your mind.
Thanks everyone for your replies. It's so reassuring knowing there are others feeling the same way!
I am with Arcadia and Jliegh29 - I really don't like feeling hungry all the time and at night I get so annoyed as I'd much rather be sleeping than feasting on everything I can find. My DH finds it amusing when I pack my sandwich, sustagen etc for my midnight snack!
Guess our little darlings are taking it all out of us. Worth it, but also hoping to feel more human after breastfeeding finishes :-)
