Just wondering if there's anything I can do to "prepare" my nipples for breastfeeding this time around?
Will the fact that I have breastfed previously work in my favour or is it like starting all over again?
I had a horrible time for the first few weeks breastfeeding DS, I needed to use a shield etc as my nipples were badly cracked and I'd really like to avoid that this time around if possible. I think the fact that I know how bubs should be latching will be beneficial too won't it?
Marcallen cream. get some. it's recommended to start using it in the last trimester to prepare nipples for breastfeeding.
it also helps to heal cracked nipples/keep them moist/prevent cracking.
You don't need to do anything to prepare your nipples. The best thing you can do is get good advice and help right from the start to make sure attachment is correct.
The fact that you've done it before does help - but a refresher is a good idea. I thought I knew it all, but it was a bit of a shock to be holding a floppy little baby again - it's all quite different to feeding a toddler.
The best preparation has nothing to do with the body and everything to do with the mind. There is no better preparation than taking an Australian Breastfeeding Association class is one of the best thing you can do. Your experience will help enormously, but with breastfeeding, as with everything, knowledge is power
