DS1 always fed from both sides. DS2 sometimes only wants one side...he seems to sleep just as long and be just as settled with one side as with two, but I wonder if I should persist in offering the second side. Is it an issue whether baby has one side or both sides? He's three weeks old tomorrow.
Whoops forgot to add- I offered side two if DD was awake but if she was fast asleep or it was in the middle of the night I wouldn't bother unless I felt she had fallen asleep without finishing the feed/one breast.
The m/w who visited me at home the other day said if baby came off but appeared to want more, give another go on the breast you just fed from one more time, and if more go to the other. I guess it will change once they get bigger and need more.
Doing that also makes sure baby is getting hind milk too.
Yules - the CHN said the same to me. I wondered if, as Bub gets bigger and wants more, will my supply adjust and one side give more rather than needing to give both sides? If I only give one side at a time long- term, will I be lopsided?!
Ladylove - that's exactly what I'm doing, so sounds like a plan. Also, if he wants another feed within an hour of the last, I offer the same side he had last before I offer the other.
Dd is 15.5weeks and has always had the one side. Sometimes she may take a bit of the 2nd but thats rare. She is getting plenty though as she is a little sumo lol, she was 7kg at 8weeks so would be well over 8kg now haha!
JLeigh, do you mean one side each feed, as in left this feed, right the next, then left next feed, etc? Or always the same side?
If it is the former, you should find that your breasts adjust equally - I've fed DS2 one side each feed and my boobs are equal. I couldn't have forced the second side on to him if I'd tried, it's just how he is! The other two had both side. Weird But ok!
Yeah OP, one side each feed. Glad to hear that my breasts won't be lopsided...at the moment I sometimes get one that's noticeably bigger than the other. As much as I like my new 'enormous' breasts (B cup now, up from my usual AA/A cup!!!), one big and one small is slightly embarrassing, lol!
