    Open criticism for doing bls...

Ok so were trying bls here, DD does very well and munches her way thru bread, fruits, veggies and such. It's going great, apart from the constant judgement from the inlaws, which gets dh concerned about it too!! I'm sick of them thinking they can openly judge my ways of parenting just because it's different to how they did it, because quite frankly, DD is growing fantastically and hitting milestones either on time or early, so I can't be doing too bad a job. Yes I know sometimes she chokes a bit, and she doesn't understand me when I say bring it forward, but she does bring it do the front of her mouth. And Yes I know it's scary, but it'd be just as scary introducing solids no matter what age you do it. They're bound to gag every now and then. Oh and while were at it, you don't need to tell me everytime we see you that the teething necklace is just a plastic waste of money and that she shouldn't be wearing necklaces coz it's too dangerous... Do you actually think I didn't look into that?! And that I would knowingly put my daughter in danger?!! She cries with it off when her teeth are moving, and doesn't when it's on. So it stays on. And no I don't just want to use freaking panadol!!!!! *sigh*

Sorry, had to get that out

i found it easier to not argue with anyone and just let the results speak for themselves. my DD is a star with her hand and utensil skills, and i attribute this to BLS and letting her eat at her pace.

my LO liked to copy people coughing, and so we started saying 'cough' when ever she did this. if she got food stuck, we would say 'cough' and she would bring it the front and spit it up.

Babies have a gag reflex to stop them choking. Their body naturally brings whatever is stuck back up. They will gag in the same way on mush foods, so I wouldn't worry too much. Long as she is upright so the food can come back up again

DH thought that of our teething necklace, but she's still wearing it has been non stop for about 6 months now.

My mum is the same with BLS. Even fed DD some wheetbix while I was asleep one morning! I just shrug my shoulders & get on with it, coz she only has that chance every few months The rest of the time I'm there & just hand DD whatever I'm eating. I was told she wouldn't learn how to speak properly coz she isn't chewing enough... I did explain that the best thing for speech & jaw development was breast feeding!

    It's pretty disrespectful isn't it?
IT's gagging. It's part of how they learn to eat. Choking = stopped breathing and turning blue Oh, and just FYI, they're less likely to choke if they feed themselves.
Anyway, carry on, sounds like you're doing just fine

It's funny, the people who criticise us the most are usually the ones who compliment how amazing our babies skills are.

Just remind them about their nay-saying when your baby can use cutlery at 11 months very proficiently. (like mine )

BLS is the only way to do it if you ask me You're doing a great job!

BLS is awesome but yeah, I get that sometimes its difficult when people criticize. I had people not say anything but then sit on the edge of their seats watching DD eat ready to pounce and put their fingers down her throat if she choked. I always kept the book handy to show anyone anti the pictures and that seemed to help.

the time will come when they will comment on the types of food your LO will eat compared to others I youtubed BLS for OH to watch so that he would be on the same page and he was.

oh clover I wonder why they think she isn't chewing when eating whole food

sounds like you are doing a fab job of following your LO's cues as to what works for DD

Here here hun! I hear over n over how dd is going to choke on the bits of corn she bites off the corn cob. And the pieces of mandarin I give her are dangerous! Just hit back with research. I just state now what chelle told me about speech delays in chn that are solely given purees! You're doing an awesome job, bub is thriving
I get the same about dd teething necklace too, I just can't bite my tongue anymore, I'm her mum I have my reasons for making the choices I do!!

Plenty of these ones for ya. Unsupportive family sucks.

Anyway, you're doing just fine. Mentally punch them, and carry on.

And yet if you dare criticize something they did as parents, you're the baddie

I know I've just taken my second toddler through BLS, and despite my DD having an enormous eating repertoire, great language and superb fine motor skills...they still gave me stick.

Really what they think doesn't bother me, but it did at first.

Don't worry, I had my own mother predicting the murder of Liebling by me with BLS as the murder implement. (Then again, it was one of us or the other: he was going to kill me by BFing without solid food.)

TBH, I have snapped now and will reply with "good thing I'm the Mummy then and not doing the crap you would in my place. Honestly, I have never heard so much tripe. You didn't do XYZ did you? Bloody hell, I swear your child must be adopted as they actually have a working brain." I can get ruder and more personal if I am even vaguely riled.

Oh yes, and then I negatively judge every parenting/grandparenting decision for the rest of the day, loudly and if necessary as babytalk to DS (if that's how the insult to me started).

I found lots of people were shocked when they saw my daughter feeding herself "normal" food. My mum would even buy me packets of rafferties, even though I said "she doesn't eat pureed food!", so would just give it to her in a bowl like yoghurt lol
But now that she is 14 months old, eats most things, tries new things, and is able to use utensils and drink from a cup, all I am asked is "How'd you do it?!" and get praised about how awesome she is at eating.
Don't let them get you down, and if they still want to belittle you, buy them a copy of the BLW book

ILs huh... Smile, grit your teeth and keep doing exactly what you're doing. An "oh, you think so" is more than enough. You'll be listening to plenty of complaints soon enough about fussy eaters to get plenty of proud Mummy moments in around your DD's eating! You just have to be patient. Sometimes it feels like parenting the generation above as well as the one below!
